Security Council

Denmark, Greece, Panama, Pakistan, and Somalia are stepping into their role as non-permanent members of the 缅北禁地Security Council for the biennium 2025-2026. Each member is expected to bring their unique perspective to addressing global peace and security challenges. They were elected by the 缅北禁地General Assembly, to replace Malta, Switzerland, Ecuador, Japan, and Mozambique in their respective regional groups. Disaster Relief, UNESCO

On 26 December 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake in Sumatra triggered the deadliest tsunami in recorded history. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was a global wake-up call, claiming over 227,000 lives in 15 countries. For the past 20 years, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO has worked to better understand tsunamis, prepare coastal communities, and raise the alarm when waves occur. Today, 20 years after the Boxing Day tsunami, the Global Tsunami Warning System spans the Pacific, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, Caribbean, and North-East Atlantic regions. When a significant sea-level disturbance is detected, it sends fast and accurate alerts to coastal communities, reducing response times and saving lives worldwide.

Displaced Persons and Refugees, UNHCR

Even by the standards of recent years, 2024 was a year of turmoil in which new conflicts erupted, existing crises seethed, and climate-fueled disasters multiplied. As a result, the number of people forced to flee their homes by conflict and persecution reached nearly  by the end of June. That number has undoubtedly risen further with the escalation of conflict in the Middle East and the hundreds of thousands who continue to flee violence in Sudan, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and elsewhere. While new displacement is on the rise, millions of people are trapped in situations of prolonged exile – unable to safely return home but lacking the possibility to rebuild their lives in the places they have fled to.

SDGs, FAO

During the end of year holidays, when fortunate, we spend more time with family and friends, cooking, exchanging gifts or travelling to meet loved ones. All of these actions can be done in a more sustainable way, respectful of ourselves, others, our cities and our planet. Sustainability, in fact, goes beyond the environment; it includes other things that people need, such as food, health, education, safety, jobs, equal opportunities, and a vibrant quality of life. Shaping a better future is the spirit of the holidays and the spirit of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This end of 2024 holiday season, let’s pave the way for a better year, leaving no one behind! Here are .
