Community activism took center stage at Kosovo Sustainable Development Week (KSDW) 2024, as local citizens joined forces to push for environmentally sustainable policies. The Kosovo Democratic Institute (KDI), an UNDEF partner, showcased its innovative project, Promoting Green Community Activism in Kosovo* which supports citizens to advocate for green initiatives at the local level.
Since the project’s launch in 2023, KDI has trained 146 community members to actively monitor and hold authorities accountable for their environmental commitments, facilitating real-time responses to environmental concerns. To achieve this, the project provides a digital ‘Green Platform’ a tool for reporting environmental concerns, fostering accountability, and enhancing citizen activism for sustainable policies.
also offers educational resources, including quizzes, green blogs, and podcasts to raise awareness and fuel grassroots activism. During , held from September 16-20, 2024, and organized in collaboration with the German Development Agency (GIZ), the European Union, and civil society organizations, KDI spotlighted how the platform is supporting citizens to drive meaningful change and foster a culture of environmental stewardship.
This initiative highlights the critical connection between civic engagement and sustainable development, showing that community activism can play a transformative role in building a greener future for Kosovo.
