HUR - Human Rights Classification
Rev. 7 April 2008
Introduction to the Human Rights Classification Scheme
The Human Rights Classification Scheme was first developed in 1989 by UNOG Library’s 缅北禁地Documents Indexing Unit in cooperation with experts from the former Centre for Human Rights. The scheme was used to categorize 缅北禁地documents for the Human Rights Bibliography published in 1990 and subsequent cumulating editions of the Human Rights Bibliography on CD-ROM published between 1993 and 1999.
The classification codes have been assigned to 缅北禁地documents and publications issued since 1980. They are not assigned to records for draft or restricted documents or to meeting records.
Since the cessation of production of the Human Rights Bibliography (last published in 1999), classification codes have not been systematically assigned to documents indexed by the Dag Hammarskjöld Library. They continue to be systematically assigned to documents indexed by UNOG Library's 缅北禁地Documents Indexing Unit (chiefly documents of the Commission on Human Rights, Human Rights Council and subsidiary bodies). If future bibliographies are produced, it will be necessary to undertake a project to identify and update relevant records for documents
indexed by DHL since 1999.
The HUR scheme has been used by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to classify documents posted on their website.
The HUR classification codes can serve as useful access points in searches for human rights documents; for instance, a search by the code HUR 0714 will retrieve documents that mainly concern indigenous peoples. Since HUR codes are not assigned to records for draft or restricted documents or for meeting records, those types of documents will automatically be excluded from search results by HUR classification codes. To search by HUR codes in the UNDocs OPAC, select Classification Code in the Advanced Search and enter the desired classification code (e.g. HUR 0714) selecting all of these. To search by HUR codes in UNBISnet, select Local Classification in the Keyword Search and enter the desired classification code.
The classification scheme may be expanded and new subcategories created as need arises.
