Positions:

Contains fixed-length data elements.

Positions 00-11, 17, 29, 31, 38 and 39 are defined the same way for all formats in UNBIS, i.e., the default settings.
Positions 12-16, 28, 32 and 33 are defined differently for different formats and different content values.

Fixed fields entered in 008 include the following:

Positions 00-07

Positions 00-05

Date of record creation. Computer generated in the pattern «Y³Û²Ñ²Ñ¶Ù¶Ù».

Example:

040316

Position 06:
Direct or indirect geographic subheading. UNBIS headings are not subdivided geographically, so the default is set at «n» (not applicable).

Position 07:
Romanization scheme. Indicates whether the 1XX name or title heading contains the romanized form of the headings and, if so, identifies the romanization scheme. In UNBIS, the default is «n» (not applicable).

Positions 09-11
Back to the top

Position 09:
Kind of record. Indicates whether the record represents an established or unestablished 1XX heading. In UNBIS, the default value is «a» (Established heading).

Position 12
Back to the top

Type of series. Indicates the type of series heading contained in the 130 field in a name authority record.
    a = Monographic series.
    The 130 field contains a collective series heading that applies to a group of separate publications and/or subseries.
    b = Multipart item.
    The 130 field contains a collective heading that applies to a multipart monographic publication.
    c = Series-like phrase.
    The 130 field contains a series-like phrase that may be used as a series added entry in bibliographic records.
    n = Not applicable.
    The 130 field does not represent a series or a series-like phrase and is not appropriate for use as a series added entry in bibliographic records
    z = Other.
    The 130 field contains a heading for a publication that does not fit any of the other defined codes but for which series-type treatment is required.

Positions 13-14
Back to the top

Position 13:
Numbered or unnumbered series. Indicates the numbering characteristics of the series (or series-like phrase) represented by the 130 heading.
    a = Numbered series.
    b = Unnumbered series.
    c = Numbering varies.
    n = Not applicable--the 130 heading is not a series heading.

Position 14:
Heading use--main or added entry. Indicates whether the heading is appropriate for use as a main or added entry in bibliographic records.

    a = Heading is appropriate for use as a main or added entry.
    b = Heading is not appropriate for use as a main or added entry.

Note: All types of headings, except for series titles, are always coded «a» , appropriate for use as a main or added entry, no matter how they are used in a given bibliographic record. Series titles are always coded «b» , not appropriate for use as a main or added entry.

    b = Heading is not appropriate for use as a subject added entry.
Note: In UNBIS, all types of headings, except for series titles, are always coded «a» , appropriate for use as a subject added entry. Series titles are normally coded «b» , but if a series is the subject of a publication it will also be coded «a» . For example, the «UNCTAD series on issues in international investment agreements» has been discussed in some UNCTAD documents, so it is recorded as a subject added entry (630) in the corresponding bibliographic records and is coded «a» in position 15.
