On 15 November 2022, the world’s population is projected to reach 8 billion people, a milestone in human development. This unprecedented growth is due to the gradual increase in human lifespan owing to improvements in public health, nutrition, personal hygiene and medicine. It is also the result of high and persistent levels of fertility in some countries.

While it took the global population 12 years to grow from 7 to 8 billion, it will take approximately 15 years—until 2037— for it to reach 9 billion, a sign that the overall growth rate of the global population is slowing.

Countries with the highest fertility levels tend to be those with the lowest income per capita. Global population growth has therefore over time become increasingly concentrated among the world’s poorest countries, most of which are in sub-Saharan Africa. In these countries, sustained rapid population growth can thwart the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which remain the world’s best pathway toward a happy and healthy future.

Even though population growth magnifies the environmental impact of economic development, rising per capita incomes are the main driver of unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. The countries with the highest per capita consumption of material resources and emissions of greenhouse gas emissions tend to be those where income per capita is higher, not those where the population is growing rapidly.

Meeting the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise, while achieving the SDGs, critically depends on curbing unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. Yet, slower population growth over many decades could help to mitigate the further accumulation of environmental damage in the second half of the current century.

Overview

This year’s World Population Day, which is observed on 11 July each year, will be marked in anticipation of a landmark growth of the global population, which is projected to reach 8 billion on 15 November 2022.

To mark the day, �山��DESA’s Population Division will launch World Population Prospects 2022, the twenty-seventh edition of the official United Nations population estimates and projections, which also projects that India will surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023.

This is an occasion to celebrate our diversity, recognize our common humanity, and marvel at advancements in health that have extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality rates, according to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Overview

The special theme of the fifty-fifth session of the Commission on Population and Development will be Population and sustainable development, in particular sustained and inclusive economic growth. The theme is related to chapter III of the Programme of Action adopted by the International Conference on Population and Development, which took place in Cairo in September 1994. That chapter emphasized the need to integrate population in development strategies and to address the interlinkages between population, sustained economic growth and poverty on the one hand, and between population and the environment on the other. These issues remain relevant today and have, in fact, assumed new importance and urgency.

Since the Cairo conference, there has been an accumulation of evidence on environmental problems attributable to unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. Such problems are compounded and amplified by continuing population growth. Population ageing, a gradual but relentless global demographic trend, brings the potential of economic benefits and personal opportunities associated with longer and healthier lives, as well as increased fiscal and macroeconomic pressures. As more countries are entering advanced stages of population ageing, those with persistently low levels of fertility face the reality or the prospect of population decline and need to formulate appropriate policy responses.

This expert group meeting will review the latest evidence and analysis of these topics, drawing from the experiences of countries in all regions of the world. The presentations and discussion during the expert meeting are expected to generate inputs for the preparation of the Secretary-General's report on the theme of the fifty-fifth session of the Commission.

Overview

At World Population Day 2021, which is observed on 11 July each year, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on fertility will take center stage as the main theme for the commemoration.

To mark the day, �山��DESA’s Population Division, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), is organizing an online panel discussion of leading demographers and population experts on 14 July from 9 to 9.45 am EDT to discuss the impact of the pandemic on fertility preferences and behaviours, the availability and use of family planning, teenage marriage, challenges of data collection and more.

The webinar will be moderated by Mr. Raj Kumar, founding President and Editor-in-Chief of Devex.

Enhancing international cooperation in the field of migration

Overview

Migration has moved to the top of the policy agenda in many countries around the world, and as a result there are renewed calls for States to invest in improving data on migration. There is an urgent need to improve the availability, international comparability, timeliness and quality of migration data. Statistical projects and initiatives on migration and migrants are currently underway in many countries in national statistical institutes, relevant ministries and institutions, research centres, as well as in several international organisations. However, these initiatives often remain fragmented, confined to each discipline and are not usually brought together and disseminated in a comprehensive and integrated manner.

In this context, the OECD, IOM and UNDESA jointly organised the first International Forum on Migration Statistics. This is aimed at becoming a regular event that will contribute to intensify the exchange of information, to promote mutual learning and to facilitate cooperation among relevant stakeholders. It brought together all producers, analysts and users of migration statistics in a community of interest centred on migration measurement issues. It mobilised expertise from a wide range of disciplines - such as political science, economics, demography, development, geospatial science, sociology, statistics, and information technology - that can contribute to improve global understanding of the migration phenomenon.
