There is an urgent need to improve the availability, international comparability, timeliness and quality of migration data. Statistical projects and initiatives on migration and migrants are currently underway in many countries in national statistical institutes, relevant ministries and institutions, research centres, as well as in several international organisations. However, these initiatives often remain fragmented, confined to each discipline and are not usually brought together and disseminated in a comprehensive and integrated manner.</p> <p>In this context, the OECD, IOM and UNDESA jointly organised the first International Forum on Migration Statistics. This is aimed at becoming a regular event that will contribute to intensify the exchange of information, to promote mutual learning and to facilitate cooperation among relevant stakeholders. It brought together all producers, analysts and users of migration statistics in a community of interest centred on migration measurement issues. It mobilised expertise from a wide range of disciplines - such as political science, economics, demography, development, geospatial science, sociology, statistics, and information technology - that can contribute to improve global understanding of the migration phenomenon.</p> <h3>Organization of work</h3> <table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="width: 100%;"> <tbody> <tr> <td colspan="2" style="background-color: gold;"><strong>Monday, 15 January 2018</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td style="width: 175px; vertical-align: top;"> <p>09:15 - 09:45</p> </td> <td> <p>Welcoming remarks</p> <ul> <li>Angel Gurría, Secretary General, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)</li> <li>William Lacy Swing, Director General, International Organization for Migration (IOM)</li> <li>Liu Zhenmin, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations</li> </ul> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="width: 175px; vertical-align: top;"> <p>09:45 - 11:00</p> </td> <td> <p><strong>Plenary session 1</strong></p> <p>Challenges for improving the production and use of migration data: Country perspectives&nbsp;</p> <p>How are National Statistical Offices (NSOs) responding to the growing demand for migration data? Today, virtually all countries in the world are simultaneously countries of destination, origin and transit for international migrants. Traditional migration patterns are complemented by new migratory flows, fueled by changing economic, demographic, political and social realities. Changing migration patterns affect the size and composition of migrant populations as well as host and origin economies and societies. The rise in global mobility, the growing complexity of migratory patterns and the impact of population movements have contributed to international migration becoming a priority for the international community.</p> <p>The purpose of the meeting will be to contribute to the preparation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration by (a) taking stock of existing data and research on relevant topics, (b) highlighting gaps in the current evidence base and (c) assessing priorities for the further development of data, research and training to support the implementation of the Global Compact. In addition, the meeting will allow participants to share information about progress in monitoring the implementation of the migration-related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The meeting will also allow participants to present and coordinate their recent activities and initiatives on migration.</p> <h3>Documents</h3> <ul> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/201802_unpd_cm16_objectives_16th_cm.pdf">Objectives</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/201802_unpd_cm16_agenda_16th_cm.pdf">Agenda</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_cm16_2018_organization_of_work.pdf">Organization of work</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/201802_unpd_cm16_report_16thcm.pdf">Report</a></li> </ul> <h3>Organization of work</h3> <table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="width: 100%;"> <tbody> <tr> <td colspan="2" style="width: 150px; vertical-align: top; height: 30px; background-color: gold;"><strong>Thursday, 15 February 2018</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td style="width: 75px; vertical-align: top;">10:00-13:00</td> <td style="vertical-align: top; width: 80%;"> <p><strong><a href="https://edit.media.un.org/en/asset/k1p/k1po45ii9o">Morning session</a></strong></p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="width: 150px;">&nbsp;</td> <td> <p><strong>Opening of the meeting</strong></p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="width: 15%;">&nbsp;</td> <td> <ul> <li>Liu Zhenmin, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs. <a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/201802_unpd_cm16_opening_usg_message.pdf">Opening remarks</a></li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="width: 15%;">&nbsp;</td> <td> <p><strong>I. Subsequently, the <a href="http://www.un.org/en/development/desa/millennium-development-goals.html">Millennium Development Goals</a> and the <a href="https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/post2015/transformingourworld">2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development</a> integrated many goals and objectives of the ICPD Programme of Action.</p> <p>While important progress has been made, considerable gaps still exist in the implementation of different areas of the Programme of Action. In 2010, the General Assembly decided to extend the Programme of Action beyond 2014 with a view to fully meeting its goals and objectives (<a href="http://www.un.org/en/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=A/RES/65/234%20">A/RES/65/234</a>). In 2014, the Secretary-General reported that progress in implementing the goals and objectives of the Programme of Action had been unequal and fragmented and that new challenges, realities and opportunities had emerged since its adoption (<a href="http://www.un.org/en/ga/search/view_doc.asp?symbol=E/CN.9/2014/4%20">E/CN.9/2014/4</a>). The General Assembly held a special <a href="http://www.un.org/en/development/desa/population/events/other/4/en/special_session.html#overview">session</a> in September 2014 to assess the status of implementation of the Programme of Action and to renew political support for actions required for the full achievement of its goals and objectives.</p> <p>The Commission on Population and Development (CPD), at its fifty-second session in 2019, will carry out a review and appraisal of the ICPD Programme of Action and its contribution to the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda. The timing of this appraisal, 25 years after “Cairo”, is consistent with the five-year cycle of review of the status of implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action carried out by the CPD in 2004, 2009 and 2014, respectively. In preparation for the fifty-second session of the CPD, the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs will convene an expert group meeting. The meeting will examine progress and gaps in implementing the goals and objectives set out in the ICPD Programme of Action and explore the potential implications of future de</p> <p>Demographic trends for the full implementation of the Programme, and discuss the contribution of the ICPD Programme of Action to the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda. The meeting will also examine progress in measuring sustainable development indicators related to population.</p> <hr /> <h3>Documents</h3> <ul> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd-egm_201811_egm_objectives.pdf">Objectives</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd-egm_201811_egm_agenda.pdf">Agenda</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd-egm_201811_egm_organizationofwork.pdf">Organization of work </a></li> <li>Background documents*</li> <li>Notes for panelists and moderators [<a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/guidance_note_panels_session_i_through_v_reportofthemeeting.pdf">Panels I-V]</a> [<a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd-egm_201811_guidance_note_panel_vi.pdf">Panel VI]</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_egm_201811_list_of_participants.pdf">List of participants</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd-egm_201811_desa_voice_nov2018.pdf">News and media</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd-egm_201811_reportofthemeeting.pdf">Report</a></li> </ul> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-relatted-links field-type-link-field field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Related links:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="https://population.un.org/wpp/">World Population Prospects, The 2017 Revision Highlights</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="https://population.un.org/wup/">World Urbanization Prospects, The 2018 Revision</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/2018">2018</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/expert-group-meeting">Expert Group Meeting</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/icpd">ICPD</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/programme-action">Programme of Action</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-featured-categories field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Categories:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/categories/expert-group">Expert group</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/categories/sustainable-development-goals">Sustainable development goals</a></div></div></div> Thu, 10 Jan 2019 14:59:00 +0000 MSTOCKTO 588 at /development/desa/pd
