Overview

The President of the General Assembly will host a one-day Informal Thematic Debate on International Migration and Development ('the debate') at �山��Headquarters in New York on 19 May 2011, pursuant to A/RES/63/225. The debate is intended to build on the on-going dialogue on international migration and development, and to contribute to the process leading to the second High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development to be held by the �山��General Assembly in 2013.

Overview

The Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs organized an expert group meeting on adolescents, youth, and development. The meeting was held at the United Nations in New York from 21 to 22 July 2011.

The meeting was organized in preparation for the forty-fifth session of the Commission on Population and Development, scheduled to take place in April 2012, which would focus on “Adolescents and youth”. It was held during the 2010-2011 International Year of Youth, as promulgated by General Assembly resolution A/RES/64/134.

The meeting brought together experts from different disciplines and regions to present and discuss research on two broad themes, namely (a) the demographic dynamics that shape the number and characteristics of adolescents and youth, and (b) the ways in which adolescents and young people can be agents of socio-economic development. Selected papers prepared by the experts participating in the meeting are available as part of the Expert Paper Series published by the Population Division.

Overview

The Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs organized an expert group meeting to address issues associated with the estimation and projection of mortality levels in context of humanitarian crises, including conflicts, violence, famine and natural disasters as well as in respect to the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). The meeting was held at the United Nations in New York from 14 to 15 November 2011.

Participants reviewed the latest evidence of crises that cause significant rises in mortality levels and discussed to initiate how such evidence could inform the preparation of mortality estimates by the Population Division. The meeting also considered trends in mortality from NCDs with a view to informing assumptions about future mortality trends.

Ninth coordination meeting on international migration

Overview

The Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations is organizing the Ninth Coordination Meeting on International Migration. The Meeting is being held in response to General Assembly Resolution 58/208 of 13 February 2004, which requests the Secretary-General to continue convening meetings to coordinate international migration activities.

The Ninth Coordination Meeting on International Migration has the following three objectives: (a) to examine the development of indicators that measure the contribution of international migration to countries of origin and destination; (b) to exchange information on recent initiatives to build capacities on international migration and development, and (c) to discuss the contribution of United Nations agencies, funds and programmes and other relevant organizations to the Global Forum on Migration and Development as well as to the informal thematic debate on international migration and development which will be organized by the President of the General Assembly on 19 May 2011.

By providing participants with the opportunity to present their activities, the Meeting will contribute to greater coherence of the United Nations and other international organizations in responding to the growing demand from Member States to support and develop activities on international migration and development.

The outcome of the meeting will contribute to the preparation of the report of the Secretary-General on international migration and development for the sixty-seventh session of the General Assembly.
