Overview

The Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs is organizing an expert meeting on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on fertility at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 10 and 11 May 2021.

The purpose of the meeting is: (a) to review experiences from past public health and economic crises and identify mechanisms through which the COVID-19 pandemic may affect fertility in various parts of the world; (b) to assess recent data on marriage and union formation, fertility preferences, use of family planning, and reported numbers of births from selected countries with a view to assess the possible impact of the pandemic on fertility; and (c) to provide recommendations for the Division to develop assumptions on the impact of the pandemic on fertility levels and trends at the global, regional and subregional levels in the short to medium term in support of the official United Nations population estimates and projections that are currently being revised and updated by the Division.

To facilitate the discussion, the Population Division has designed a short questionnaire to collect expert views on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on fertility. The results will be discussed in the last session of the meeting and will be used to inform the forthcoming revision of the World Population Prospects.

Overview

The United Nations Commission on Population and Development (CPD) was to address the special theme “Population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development” at its fifty-third session in 2020. In preparation for the session, the Population Division prepared the report of the Secretary-General on population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development, which was issued in February 20201. Due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the Commission was not able to hold its formal session at the end of March 2020. The Commission decided to postpone a full consideration of the theme to its fifty-fourth session in 2021.

The report prepared for the 2020 session focused on four broad themes:

Concepts, measures and state of food security and nutrition
Nutrition, food security and population health, including diets, nutritional habits and burden of disease; hunger and undernutrition; and overweight and obesity
Population growth, food consumption and sustainability
Rural development, population movements and settlement patterns.

To inform preparation of an updated report of the Secretary-General for the 2021 session, the Population Division of �山��DESA will convene an expert group meeting on the theme, to be held virtually from 28 to 30 October 2020. The expert group should advise on 1) elements where new data or analysis has become available in 2020; 2) elements that should receive greater attention in the new report; and 3) evidence for impacts of COVID-19 in each area.

INTRODUCTION, NEW EVIDENCE AND COVID-19 IMPACTS The 54th session of the Commission on Population and Development (19-23 April 2021) will consider the special theme “Population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development”. The first day of the expert group meeting will provide an introduction to the Commission’s deliberations on the theme; highlight new data on food security, nutrition and health; and review the impacts of COVID-19 on various aspects of food security and nutrition.

Overview

The purpose of the meeting is to assess the coverage and accuracy and consistency of the data and estimates related to early adolescent fertility and to review the scope of associated demographic factors to assess the accuracy of early adolescent fertility data and estimates. The invited experts from United Nations system entities, research institutions and data producers will also review and discuss approaches for early adolescent fertility data validation, estimation and selection for SDG reporting and analysis. Overview

The 49th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) will be devoted to the theme "Strengthening the demographic evidence base for the post-2015 development agenda". The United Nations Population Division has convened an expert group meeting in October 2015 to inform the �山��Secretary-General report to be presented at this CPD session in April 2016.

The Strengthening the Demographic Evidence Base for the Post-2015 Development Agenda expert group meeting will bring together specialists to review how the most common sources of demographic data, such as census, surveys, civil registration and vital statistics systems and administrative records, meet the needs of the United Nations post-2015 development agenda. Experts will also be invited to reflect on new data sources that are becoming increasingly available for more rapid and more localized monitoring and how these new sources can complement more traditional data sources.

The meeting will identify points of intervention for strengthening the demographic evidence base throughout the data life cycle that would contribute to more relevant, effective, efficient and sustainable action-oriented development planning and monitoring, and ultimately to achieving the post-2015 development agenda.

Core questions to be discussed during the meeting include:

What are the experiences and lessons learned from demographic data collection, compilation, analysis, dissemination and utilization within the context of the MDGs?
What are the key challenges of existing data sources to fulfil the needs of the post-2015 development agenda, including in terms of baseline setting for the targets, frequency, timeliness and disaggregation of data available?
What are the recommendations on how to strengthen the demographic evidence base and what are the actions required to implement them?

Overview

World Population Prospects (WPP), the United Nations population estimates and projections prepared by DESA’s Population Division since 1951, form a comprehensive set of demographic data to assess population trends at the global, regional and national levels. Widely considered to be the world’s most authoritative dataset on population levels, trends and characteristics, WPP is used for calculating one-third of the indicators used to track progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Starting in 2021, WPP will estimate and project the population by single age for each year (“1x1”), replacing the current “5x5” approach.

In order to achieve this objective, the Population Division is organizing an online expert group meeting on “Methods for the World Population Prospects 2021 and beyond” from 6 and 8 April 2020. The purpose of the meeting is to bring together experts to discuss and share experiences in the use of methods to develop robust annual time series of various demographic indicators (child, adult and old-age mortality, fertility, migration), incorporate uncertainty in population estimates, produce models to derive mortality and fertility age patterns, and reconcile the various demographic components of change to reconstruct coherent populations by age, period and cohort from 1950 to 2020.

Overview

The question of how to feed a growing global population has been central to discussions around population and development for decades. While the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development highlighted the problem of undernutrition, today's discussion of malnutrition is broader and includes stunting, wasting, overweight and obesity, as well as micronutrient deficiencies. Moreover, there is an increasing recognition of the challenges to food security posed by factors such as climate change, conflict and economic downturns.

Recognizing the importance and timeliness of these topics, the United Nations Commission on Population and Development decided in 2018 that the thematic focus of its fifty-third session in 2020 would be "Population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development". In preparation for the upcoming session, the Population Division of �山��DESA will convene an expert group meeting on this topic, to be held in New York from 16 to 17 September 2019.

The expert meeting is expected to provide substantive inputs for the preparation of the reports of the Secretary-General on the special theme of the fifty-third session of the Commission on Population and Development. In particular, the meeting will result in draft recommendations on ways in which the Commission can contribute to the international dialogue on the issues.

Overview

Population ageing is expected to have a major impact on life in the twenty-first century. Concerned by the looming pension crisis, many Governments are promoting more self-reliance in income security for older persons and greater family responsibility for providing care. Consequently, patterns of care-giving and co-residence are emerging as pre-eminent issues related to the well-being of older persons.

To discuss the most pressing issues related to population ageing, living arrangements of older persons and possible Government responses, the Population Division organized a meeting of experts from 8-10 February 2000. Among the issues addressed were the historical and cultural contexts of population ageing and living arrangements, the social processes through which living arrangements of older persons influence the demand for formal and informal support systems and how governments respond to these perceived needs. The meeting also aimed to improve the knowledge base, identify priorities for future research and raise the long-term visibility of ageing-related issues.

Overview

The Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (�山��DESA), with financial support provided by the National Institute on Aging of the United States, organized an expert group meeting on policy responses to population ageing and population decline. The meeting took place in New York City from 16 to 18 October 2000. The meeting was organized in follow up to the publication of the report Replacement Migration: Is it a Solution to Declining and Ageing Populations? by the Population Division in March 2000.

The meeting aimed to investigate the consequences of projected population decline and population ageing as well as the policy responses to cope with such demographic changes. In particular, the meeting (1) reviewed the demographic prospects of countries and regions during the next half-century, (2) identified the consequences of population decline and population ageing, and (3) examine various policy options that Governments might adopt to cope with such unprecedented demographic challenges.

Overview

The Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (�山��DESA) organized an expert group meeting on completing the fertility transition. The meeting took place at the United Nations in New York from 11 to 14 March 2002.

The meeting discussed assumptions for future levels of fertility, to be applied by the Division in its population projections for countries with intermediate levels of fertility, that is, countries where current fertility levels range between 2.1 and 5 children per woman. Until recently, the Division assumed that total fertility levels in intermediate-fertility countries would not fall below replacement level (2.1 children per woman) by 2050. However, this assumption has become less tenable as fertility levels in a growing number of developing and developed countries have fallen to, and remained, well below replacement.

Participants proposed that fertility in intermediate-fertility countries could decline to 1.85 children per woman by 2050. This assumption will have a momentous impact, both because of the large population of the intermediate-fertility countries (43 per cent of world population in 2000), and because of the many implications of sustained below-replacement fertility.
