In preparation for the session, the Population Division prepared the report of the Secretary-General on population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development, which was issued in February 20201. Due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, the Commission was not able to hold its formal session at the end of March 2020. The Commission decided to postpone a full consideration of the theme to its fifty-fourth&nbsp;session in 2021.</p> <p>The report prepared for the 2020 session focused on four broad themes:</p> <ul> <li>Concepts, measures and state of food security and nutrition</li> <li>Nutrition, food security and population health, including diets, nutritional habits and burden of disease; hunger and undernutrition; and overweight and obesity</li> <li>Population growth, food consumption and sustainability</li> <li>Rural development, population movements and settlement patterns.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>To inform preparation of an updated report of the Secretary-General for the 2021 session, the Population Division of 山DESA will convene an expert group meeting on the theme, to be held virtually from 28 to 30 October 2020. The expert group should advise on 1) elements where new data or analysis has become available in 2020; 2) elements that should receive greater attention in the new report; and 3) evidence for impacts of COVID-19 in each area.&nbsp;</p> <h3>Documents&nbsp;</h3> <ul> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_cpd54_egm_concept_note.pdf">Concept note</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_cpd54_egm_draft_agenda.pdf">Agenda</a>&nbsp;</li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_cpd54_egm_organization_of_work.pdf">Organization of work</a>&nbsp;</li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/desa_pd_2020_cpd54_egm_list_of_participants.pdf">List of participants</a>&nbsp;</li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_cpd54_egm_speaker_bios.pdf">Speaker bios</a></li> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/files/documents/2021/Feb/egm_population_food_security_nutrition_clean_10feb.2021.pdf">Report</a></li> </ul> <h3>Organization of work&nbsp;</h3> <table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="width: 95%;"> <tbody> <tr> <td colspan="2" style="background-color: gold;"> <p><strong>DAY 1: Wednesday 28 October</strong></p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2"> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>INTRODUCTION, NEW EVIDENCE AND COVID-19 IMPACTS</p> <p>The 54th session of the Commission on Population and Development (19-23 April 2021) will consider the special theme “Population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development”. Widely considered to be the world’s most authoritative dataset on population levels, trends and characteristics, WPP is used for calculating one-third of the indicators used to track progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Starting in 2021, WPP will estimate and project the population by single age for each year (“1x1”), replacing the current “5x5” approach.</p> <p> In order to achieve this objective, the Population Division is organizing an online expert group meeting on “Methods for the World Population Prospects 2021 and beyond” from 6 and 8 April 2020. The purpose of the meeting is to bring together experts to discuss and share experiences in the use of methods to develop robust annual time series of various demographic indicators (child, adult and old-age mortality, fertility, migration), incorporate uncertainty in population estimates, produce models to derive mortality and fertility age patterns, and reconcile the various demographic components of change to reconstruct coherent populations by age, period and cohort from 1950 to 2020.</p> <table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="width: 90%;"> <tbody> <tr> <td style="height: 20px;"> <h3>Documents</h3> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="height: 2px;"> <ul> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_2020_concept-note_egm-methods-for-wpp2021-and-beyond.pdf">Concept note</a></p> </li> </ul> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="height: 2px;"> <ul> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_2020_egm_agenda.pdf">Agenda</a></p> </li> </ul> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="height: 2px;"> <ul> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_2020_egm_list-participants_rev1.pdf">List of participants</a></p> </li> </ul> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="height: 2px;"> <ul> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_2020_egm_sessions.pdf">Sessions</a>&nbsp;</p> </li> </ul> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="height: 2px;"> <ul> <li><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/undesa_pd_2020_egm-report_methods_wpp.pdf" target="_blank">Report</a></li> </ul> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-relatted-links field-type-link-field field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">Related links:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_2020_concept-note_egm-methods-for-wpp2021-and-beyond.pdf">Concept note</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_2020_egm_agenda.pdf">Agenda</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_2020_egm_list-participants_rev1.pdf">List of Participants</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_2020_egm_sessions.pdf">Sessions</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-tags field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-inline clearfix"><div class="field-label">tags:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/2020">2020</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/expert-group-meeting">Expert Group Meeting</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/population-trends">Population trends</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/tags/sdgs">SDGs</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-featured-categories field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Categories:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/categories/population">Population</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/development/desa/pd/categories/homepage">Homepage</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/development/desa/pd/categories/expert-group">Expert group</a></div></div></div> Mon, 06 Apr 2020 16:22:00 +0000 MSTOCKTO 3260 at /development/desa/pd Expert group meeting on population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development /development/desa/pd/events/expert-group-meeting-population-food-security-nutrition-and-sustainable-development <div class="field field-name-field-date field-type-date field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><span class="date-display-range"><span class="date-display-start">Monday, 16 September 2019 - 10:00am</span> to <span class="date-display-end">Tuesday, 17 September 2019 - 6:00pm</span></span></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><h3>Overview</h3> <p>The question of how to feed a growing global population has been central to discussions around population and development for decades. While the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development highlighted the problem of undernutrition, today's discussion of malnutrition is broader and includes stunting, wasting, overweight and obesity, as well as micronutrient deficiencies. Moreover, there is an increasing recognition of the challenges to food security posed by factors such as climate change, conflict and economic downturns.</p> <p>Recognizing the importance and timeliness of these topics, the United Nations Commission on Population and Development decided in 2018 that the thematic focus of its fifty-third session in 2020 would be "Population, food security, nutrition and sustainable development". In preparation for the upcoming session, the Population Division of 山DESA will convene an expert group meeting on this topic, to be held in New York from 16 to 17 September 2019.</p> <p>The expert meeting is expected to provide substantive inputs for the preparation of the reports of the Secretary-General on the special theme of the fifty-third session of the Commission on Population and Development. In particular, the meeting will result in draft recommendations on ways in which the Commission can contribute to the international dialogue on the issues.</p> <h3>Documents</h3> <ul> <li><a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/Concept_Note.pdf" target="_blank">Concept note</a></li> <li><a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/Draft_Agenda.pdf" target="_blank">Agenda</a></li> <li><a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/Organization_of_work.pdf" target="_blank">Organization of work</a></li> <li><a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/Report_of_the_meeting.pdf" target="_blank">Report</a></li> </ul> <h3>&nbsp;Organization of work</h3> <table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="6" style="width: 100%;"> <thead> <tr> <th colspan="2" scope="col" style="text-align: left; background-color: gold; height: 25px;"> <p><strong>Monday, 16 September 2019</strong></p> </th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td style="width: 150px; vertical-align: top;"> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>10:00 - 10:15</p> </td> <td> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Session I: Opening of the meeting</strong></p> <ul> <li>John Wilmoth, Director, Population Division/DESA [<a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/Opening_remarks_Wilmoth.pdf" target="_blank">opening remarks</a>]</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="1" rowspan="2" style="text-align: left; vertical-align: top;"> <p>10:15 - 11:30</p> </td> <td> <p><strong>Session II: Setting the stage: Trends, concepts, definitions, and data sources</strong></p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <ul> <li> <p><strong>Moderator:</strong> Sandile Similane, UNFPA</p> </li> <li> <p>Nancy Aburto, FAO,&nbsp;Overview of food security and nutrition concepts; hunger and food security indicators: trends and data sources [<a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/presentations/Monday/Session2/Nancy_Aburto_OVERVIEW%20FAO%20v5.pdf" target="_blank">presentation</a>]</p> </li> <li> <p>Ruben Grajeda, WHO AM/PAHO (video link),&nbsp;Nutrition indicatiors: trends and data sources [<a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/presentations/Monday/Session2/R_Grajedar%20-%20Nutrition%20indicators%20and%20Trends.pdf" target="_blank">presentation</a>]</p> </li> <li> <p>Frank Swiaczny, Population Division/DESA,&nbsp;Demographic megatrends and global population growth [<a href="/en/development/desa/population/events/pdf/expert/30/presentations/Monday/Session2/Frank_Swiaczny_UNDESA_PowerPoint_EGM%20CPD53.pdf" target="_blank">presentation</a>]</p> </li> </ul> </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="1" rowspan="2" style="vertical-align: top;"> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>11:45 - 1:00</p> </td> <td> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Session III: Food security and population change</strong></p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td> <ul> <li> <p>a. Concerned by the looming pension crisis, many Governments are promoting more self-reliance in income security for older persons and greater family responsibility for providing care. Consequently, patterns of care-giving and co-residence are emerging as pre-eminent issues related to the well-being of older persons.</p> <p>To discuss the most pressing issues related to population ageing, living arrangements of older persons and possible Government responses, the Population Division organized a meeting of experts from 8-10 February 2000. Among the issues addressed were the historical and cultural contexts of population ageing and living arrangements, the social processes through which living arrangements of older persons influence the demand for formal and informal support systems and how governments respond to these perceived needs. The meeting also aimed to improve the knowledge base, identify priorities for future research and raise the long-term visibility of ageing-related issues.</p> <h3>Proceedings of the meeting</h3> <ul> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_egm_200002_preface.pdf">Preface and notes</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_egm_200002_annexes.pdf">Agenda</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_egm_200002_annexes.pdf">List of participants</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_egm_200002_annexes.pdf">List of documents</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_egm_200002_report.pdf">Report</a></p> </li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h3>Agenda</h3> <table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="width: 95%;"> <tbody> <tr> <td> <p>&nbsp;1. The meeting took place at the United Nations in New York from 11 to 14 March 2002.</p> <p> The meeting discussed assumptions for future levels of fertility, to be applied by the Division in its population projections for countries with intermediate levels of fertility, that is, countries where current fertility levels range between 2.1 and 5 children per woman. Until recently, the Division assumed that total fertility levels in intermediate-fertility countries would not fall below replacement level (2.1 children per woman) by 2050. However, this assumption has become less tenable as fertility levels in a growing number of developing and developed countries have fallen to, and remained, well below replacement.&nbsp;</p> <p> Participants proposed that fertility in intermediate-fertility countries could decline to 1.85 children per woman by 2050. This assumption will have a momentous impact, both because of the large population of the intermediate-fertility countries (43 per cent of world population in 2000), and because of the many implications of sustained below-replacement fertility.</p> <h3>Documents</h3> <ul> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_egm_200203_executive_summary.pdf">Executive Summary</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_egm_200203_report.pdf">Report</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_egm_200203_annexes.pdf">Annexes: Agenda, List of participants, List of documents</a></p> </li> <li> <p><a href="/development/desa/pd/sites/www.un.org.development.desa.pd/files/unpd_egm_200203_summary_countrypapers.pdf">Summary of country papers</a></p> </li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <h3>Organization of work</h3> <table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="width: 100%;"> <tbody> <tr> <td colspan="2" style="height: 30px; background-color: gold;"> <p><strong>Monday, 11 March 2002</strong></p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td style="vertical-align: top;"> <p>Morning</p> </td> <td> <p>I.
