People now have easier access to find and download Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) publications and official documents. ECLAC has recently improved its two primary digital communication tools — the website and the Digital Repository The Digital Repository is an online platform that stores 37,000 ECLAC documents related to the development of the Latin America and the Caribbean region, from the first publication of ECLAC in 1948 to the most recent. It is continually updated with improved designs and advanced search features. The latest version of it covers 8,000 authors and 120 collections, with a total of more than 2.5 million pages of historical and current information. It is maintained by the Hernán Santa Cruz Library and is designed to be easily accessible for all users. Miguel Torres, editor of the ECLAC Review, encourages fellow editors and publicists to utilize the Digital Repository to learn about all the knowledge that ECLAC has generated over decades. There were 1.5 million downloads from 170 countries over the past year. More downloads are predicted in the coming years as there are more documents and data formats to choose from - PDF, TXT, RDF, XML, and CSV - which allows the development of applications and interoperability with other repositories through data harvesting. The Digital Repository is also designed to store technical demographic documents that are no longer available to print. Mario Acu?a, a consultant at ECLAC's Population and Development Division, says the repository has all of the Commission's written material digitized. It makes search much easier and it allows users to find an unimaginable amount of documents that enrich our own research.
