The digital divide is one of the greatest obstacles now, due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has put millions out of the education system. Through the installation of solar panels in the local schools and homes of rural Liberia, as well as solar street lights, Green Hope Foundation bridged this divide by providing Computer Literacy to girls and young women in the evenings after they complete their chores. These communities have been severely affected by COVID-19, causing more girls and young women to drop out of school due to the digital divide. They also face the added threat of sexual harassment because of the lack of electricity in their communities. The solar panels on the schools and homes ensure that the girls and young women can study well, especially at night and be safe from sexual assault. The solar street lights ensure that the girls and women feel safe when walking to and from the school and their homes in the evenings. The education powered by climate-friendly and clean energy that Green Hope Foundation provides in the form of Computer Literacy ensures that they have the necessary skillsets to enter the economy and get good jobs that help uplift their community, instead of descending into a life of drugs and crime.
