Pax Christi International honoured the Pacific Climate Warriors with the 2020 peace award. This award promotes climate justice and ecological catastrophe as an issue that is fundamental to human peace and security. It raises global awareness about the specific vulnerability of the Pacific Island nations, indigenous people, and young people. Upon making their decision for the Pacific Climate Warriors, the members of Pax Christi International board acknowledged the admirable leadership shown by young people on the critical issue. They also want to draw attention to the region of Oceania, a beautiful part of the world which is too often overlooked.
Their mission is to peacefully raise awareness of their communities’ vulnerability to climate change, to show their people’s strength and resilience in the face of extraordinary challenges, and to nonviolently resist the fossil fuel industry whose activities damage their environment in the Pacific region. This initiative allowed the Pacific Climate Warriors to speak more directly about the challenges indigenous and young people face in the Pacific Island nations.
