Ladies and gentlemen,
We have reached the closing session of the meeting on “ClimateScanner Global Call: Engaging Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in assessing national climate action”.
I would like to thank the Federal Court of Accounts of Brazil for partnering with us in the organization of this meeting.
It has been an incredibly rich event.
I would also like to extend my gratitude to all the participants for the time and effort they put into sharing their assessments and insights.
This meeting has served as a global call to action and a moment of reflection for the Supreme Audit Institutions community. Your discussions highlight the critical role that this community plays in providing accountability and oversight of national responses to climate change. Moreover, you have shared valuable examples on how we can build on this work.
You have reflected on the methodologies and approaches for SAIs to independently assess national responses to climate change, how these methodologies can be further developed and applied in your national contexts, as well as the key entry points for SAIs.
You have shared how SAIs are conducting audits on various topics related to climate change, and indicated your commitment to continue this work in the future.
Interventions during the past two days have highlighted the complexity of the task, but also the great potential of your work on climate. The wide application of the ClimateScanner by SAIs can generate valuable results to support national climate governance, finance and policies, and to inform global discussions on climate action and SDG13. It will also open opportunities for greater collaboration between SAIs and various stakeholders.
Ladies and gentlemen,
I am confident that the outcome of this meeting will strengthen the application of the ClimateScanner and reinforce SAIs’ commitment to assess national climate action. I also hope that it will provide timely inputs for the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) community to support the accelerated implementation, follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda, including SDG13.
As the Secretariat for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda, my Department has witnessed the massive investment that INTOSAI, its groupings and SAIs across the world have made to integrate the Sustainable Development Goals in their work. I would like to once again acknowledge this critical contribution.
The conversation that you have started this week in New York does not end here. The forthcoming 26th UN/INTOSAI Symposium from April 16th to 18th in Vienna, also has climate change as its main focus. It will be another opportunity for SAIs to collectively reflect on this theme and take stock of their experiences.
In closing, I look forward to the application of the ClimateScanner assessment tool and seeing its results, and to continued dialogue on this critical issue next month, in Vienna.
