By a letter dated 11 July 2013 (), the Permanent Representative of Burkina Faso to the United Nations requested the inclusion of the item in the agenda of the sixty-eighth session.
Consideration at the sixty-eighth session
The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 11th and 22nd meetings, on 16 October and on 1 November 2013 (see and ).
A statement was made by the representative of Uganda.
Support was expressed for the granting of observer status to the Pan African Intergovernmental Agency for Water and Sanitation for Africa in the General Assembly.
Action taken by the Sixth Committee
At the 11th meeting, on 16 October, the representative of Burkina Faso, on behalf of Austria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, the Congo, C?te d’Ivoire, Ghana, Italy, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, the Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, the Sudan, Togo, Uganda and Zimbabwe, introduced a draft resolution entitled “Observer status for the Pan African Intergovernmental Agency for Water and Sanitation for Africa in the General Assembly” (). Subsequently, Chile, Gabon and Madagascar joined in sponsoring the draft resolution.
At its 22nd meeting, on 1 November, the Committee adopted draft resolution without a vote.
Under this draft resolution, the General Assembly would decide to invite the Pan African Intergovernmental Agency for Water and Sanitation for Africa to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer; and would request the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the resolution.
