In a letter dated 7 July 2017 (), the representatives of China and Singapore to the United Nations requested the inclusion of this item in the provisional agenda of the seventy-second session.

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its and meetings, on 9 and 13 October 2017.
Statements were made by the representatives of Singapore, China, the Philippines and Japan.
Delegations expressed support for granting observer status to the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office.
Action taken by the Sixth Committee
At the 11th meeting, on 9 October, the representative of Singapore, on behalf of Angola, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Republic of Korea, Thailand and Viet Nam, introduced a draft resolution entitled “Observer status for the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office in the General Assembly” () and announced that Brunei Darussalam and Cuba had joined as sponsors of the draft resolution. Subsequently, Panama joined in sponsoring the draft resolution.
At its 15th meeting, on 13 October, the Committee adopted draft resolution A/C.6/72/L.9 without a vote.
Under this draft resolution, the General Assembly would decide to invite the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer; and request the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the resolution.
