In a letter dated 5 October 2017 (), the Permanent Representative of the Plurinational State of Bolivia to the United Nations requested the inclusion of this addition item in the agenda of the seventy-second session.

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its and meetings, on 3 and 6 November 2017.
Statements were made by the representatives of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Peru, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and Guatemala.
Delegations expressed support for granting observer status to the Fund for the Development of the Indigenous Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Action taken by the Sixth Committee
At the 28th meeting, on 3 November, the representative of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, also on behalf of Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru and Spain, introduced a draft resolution entitled “Observer status for the Fund for the Development of the Indigenous Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean in the General Assembly” () and announced that Belgium, Brazil, Cuba, Honduras, Portugal and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela had joined as sponsors of the draft resolution.
At its 29th meeting, on 6 November, the Committee adopted draft resolution A/C.6/72/L.16 without a vote.
Under this draft resolution, the General Assembly would decide to invite the the Fund for the Development of the Indigenous Peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer; and request the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the resolution.
