By the letter dated 12 August 2020 () addressed to the Secretary-General, the Permanent Representatives of Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam requested the inclusion of this item in the provisional agenda of the seventy-fifth session.

Consideration at the seventy-fifth session

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 14th, 15th and 19th meetings, on 6, 10 and 19 November 2020 (see , and ).

Statements were made by the representatives of the Republic of Korea, the PhilippinesViet NamMalaysia, Myanmar, Lao People’s Democratic RepublicCambodia and Indonesia.

Delegations expressed support for granting observer status to the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization.

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At the 14th meeting, on 6 November, the representative of the Republic of Korea, also on behalf of Afghanistan, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Germany, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam, introduced a draft resolution entitled “Observer status for the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization in the General Assembly” () and announced that Bangladesh, Qatar and Turkey had joined in sponsoring the draft resolution.

At the 19th meeting, on 19 November, the Committee adopted draft resolution without a vote.

Under this draft resolution, the General Assembly would decide to invite the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer; and request the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the resolution.
