The item entitled “Observer status for the Community of Democracies in the General Assembly” was included in the agenda of the seventieth session of the Assembly at the request of El Salvador (). The Assembly has had the item on its agenda annually since its seventieth session (decisions 70/525, 71/526, 72/525, 73/536, 74/525, 75/531 and 76/529).

At its seventy-sixth session, the Assembly decided to defer a decision on the item to its seventy-seventh session (decision 76/529).

Consideration at the seventy-seventh session

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 35th meeting, on 10 November 2022 (see ). For its consideration of the item, the Committee had before it a letter dated 10 July 2015 from the Permanent Representative of El Salvador to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General ().

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At the 35th meeting, on 10 November 2022, the Chair of the Committee announced that the Bureau had been informed that the delegation of Canada, on behalf of the sponsors, had requested that the Committee defer a decision on the request for observer status for the Community of Democracies in the General Assembly until the seventy-eighth session of the Assembly.

At the same meeting, the Committee adopted, without a vote, a draft decision under which the General Assembly would decide to defer a decision on the request for observer status for the Community of Democracies in the General Assembly to the seventy-eighth session of the Assembly.

Subsequent action taken by the General Assembly

This agenda item will be considered at the seventy-eighth session (2023).
