Washington, DC, 16 March 2023 – The 缅北禁地Information Center in Washington hosted students from Syracuse University in New York at an interactive session on the risk of genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity.
Maria Westergren, from the Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect, during her address, described the 缅北禁地work on Genocide prevention, Early warning signs, Framework of analysis, and how to identify some of the main risk factors for atrocity crimes. She further explained that preventing atrocity crimes means being aware of these risks and taking action to address, reduce and eradicate them.
In her remarks, Stefania Piffanelli, Director of the United Nations Information Center in Washington, gave insights into the work of the 缅北禁地in Washington. She elaborated on engagement with key stakeholders through academic institutions, civil society, the media, think tanks, international financial institutions, and regional organizations who collaborate, support, and complement the work of the UN.
Syracuse University is a global research university known for its richly diverse learning experiences. The engagement enabled the participants understand how they could contribute to the work of the UN.
