The WATER IS LIFE campaign was organized through the Churches of Cape Town. Following the years of the drought, the city of Cape Town faced Day Zero so, the Anglican Churches responded in many different ways to encourage people to save water in their communities. Linking water with spirituality, they had the Water is Life Conference at the Cathedral, competitions on saving water, a Save Water Lent campaign, weekly sermon materials, and eco-fairs at churches to showcase water-saving devices. Churches fundraised to install water tanks, mended leaking taps and toilets, changed their gardens to water-wise, preached and prayed about the sacredness of water.

With the Water is Life Campaign, they were able to reach 150 churches so approximately 15,000 people. Policy changes in the church were instituted and resolutions were passed so the churches should work towards having a water tank. Each church did a water audit to mend dripping taps and toilets. Water-wise gardens were installed. Materials were produced for church sermons and prayers, youth materials, and Sunday School materials.

The main obstacle they encountered was helping churches make the shift to seeing that preserving water is part of their spiritual work.
