Implementing the UN-Energy Plan of Action Towards 2025 in support of the Global
Roadmap for Accelerated SDG7 Action and Net-Zero Emissions
UNFCCC COP27 Side-event
Excellencies,
Distinguished participants,
Dear colleagues,
It is my great pleasure to address this UN-System wide side-event on energy and lend my voice to the important call for accelerated action on SDG7.
Delivering on the Paris Agreement, and on the 2030 Agenda will very much depend on the effective implementation of a just and equitable energy transition.
The concrete and practical milestones within the Secretary-General’s Global Roadmap for Accelerated SDG 7 Action will help us to advance the transition. But we must act quickly.
The UN-Energy Plan of Action Towards 2025 has helped rally UN-system action in support of the implementation of the Global Roadmap. Guided by the Plan, UN-Energy facilitates, coordinates and mobilizes joint programmes, policy analysis, capacity-building, and advocacy and outreach.
The UN-Energy Secretariat at DESA will continue to strengthen its support to the UN-Energy Co-Chairs, Mr. Achim Steiner and Ms. Damilola Oguinbiyi and its mobilization of expertise across UN-Energy members and partners to implement this Plan of Action.
The Energy Compact Action Network, supported by UN-Energy, will also play an important role to catalyse further actions and voluntary commitments through Energy Compacts.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Moving forward, the SDG7 review at the High-level Political Forum and the SDG Summit next year, present crucial opportunities to advance the achievement of SDG7 and the 2030 Agenda as a whole. We must leverage these opportunities to highlight the important synergies between SDG 7 and the climate agenda, and foster the types of cross-sectoral commitment and actions needed to make meaningful progress on both fronts.
Only through cooperation and partnerships with all stakeholders can we realise a sustainable, just and equitable world which truly leaves no one behind, for us and for future generations.
Thank you.
