Banking Services & Currency

The currency of Botswana is PULA (meaning “rain” in English). It is subdivided into 100 Thebe (meaning “shield” in English). Pula reflects the importance of rain to the agricultural economy of Botswana., making the currency a symbol of hope and prosperity. Thebe signifies protection and security in financial transactions. The Pula and Thebe are the only accepted currencies in Botswana for both formal and informal transactions.

Banks in Botswana accept the United States Dollar, Euro, British Pound and the South African Rand. For the latest exchange rates, participants are advised to refer to ‘market indicators’ for information.

Official cheques and foreign currency can be exchanged at banks, bureau-de-change, and authorized hotels. It is illegal to buy or sell foreign currency to anyone except an authorized dealer.

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) accept foreign VISA cards and major credit cards.

Banking hours are Monday to Friday from 0830hrs to 1530hrs and Saturday from 0900hrs to 1100hrs.
