Just and Inclusive Energy Transition (JIET) Compact
On 4 October 2024, in Foz do Igua?u, Brazil, the G20 Ministers responsible for energy endorsed the voluntary “Principles for Just and Inclusive Energy Transitions”. These principles, developed by the G20’s Energy Transitions Working Group, are aimed at tackling energy poverty, fostering social dialogue, respecting human rights, and promoting sustainable economic growth. Just and Inclusive Energy Transition (JIET) Compact, an initiative supported by the G20 under Brazil’s 2024 presidency, brings together the commitment of G20 nations to ensure a just, affordable, and inclusive global energy transition, aligned with the goals of sustainable development and social justice.
Background
In response to growing global demand for equitable energy access, the G20’s Energy Transition Working Group has developed and endorsed 10 guiding principles for clean and inclusive energy transitions. These principles focus on tackling energy poverty, fostering social dialogue, respecting human rights, and promoting sustainable economic growth. To codify these principles and ensure their longevity within multilateral and country-level processes, they are translated into a Just and Inclusive Energy Transition Compact, led by Brazil supported by the UN-Energy as a part of the Energy Compacts initiative.
The Compact’s Goals:
- Mobilize Support: Countries and non-state actors are encouraged to join the Compact and commit to advancing fair energy solutions.
- Encourage Action: Signatories will work together to operationalize principles that prioritize sustainable energy, economic growth, and quality jobs.
- Broaden Participation: Engagement is open to all nations, companies, and organizations who support the compact’s objectives and principles.
