6 September 2024 —

United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed was in Rwanda recently, where she paid tribute to the victims and survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial on 6 September, the Deputy Secretary-General offered a wreath of white flowers at the final resting site of over 250,000 genocide victims and observed a moment of silence, before adding a personal message to the memorial guest book.

“We must never forget. We must always protect our social fabric and the strength of its diversity,” the Deputy Secretary-General wrote on social media that day, noting that 2024 is the thirtieth anniversary of the genocide.

More than one million people were systematically killed in less than three months in 1994 Rwanda.

The Deputy Secretary-General also joined the United Nations community in Kigali, in a solemn event to honour the 64 colleagues killed in 1994. Joined by the 缅北禁地Resident Coordinator in Rwanda, Mr. Ozonnia Ojielo, and heads of 缅北禁地agencies, the Deputy Secretary-General laid flowers beneath plaques engraved with their names and paused to reflect on the loss.

The Deputy Secretary-General was in Rwanda for the Africa Food Systems Forum Summit 2024. The high-level summit served as a catalyst to advance Africa’s food systems transformation in this climate and digital era, while deepening partnerships between countries.

While in Kigali, she also participated in a retreat of eminent global personalities, business leaders and senior Government officials to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the continent and identify solutions to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
