Thirty years ago, the Earth Summit, which took place in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, paved the way for the establishment of three major conventions on the environment - specifically on biodiversity, climate change and desertification. As countries meet on all three conventions in 2022,  and indigenous rights activist Hindou Ibrahim talks about the indispensable role that indigenous communities around the world play in protecting life on our planet - its biodiversity, land and climate. 

19 April 2022 - Youth activism has been 鈥減ushing the world forward,鈥 缅北禁地High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet told Day 1 of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)鈥檚 annual Youth Forum on Tuesday.

Tahere Siisiialafia has been 鈥渋nvested in human rights鈥 since she was a child. She has been actively partaking in community activities, as well as conducting empowerment classes for children and junior young people in her community. Today, at age 31, she is president of the Pacific Youth Council, an organisation which works to foster and promote the interests and needs of young people in the Pacific. spoke to Tahere about the human rights issues in the region, why young peoples鈥 voices are so critical, and her vision for a better future for youth.

Young people are essential in promoting peace and security around the world. 缅北禁地peacekeeping operations amplify the voices of the youth and ensure that they are included in planning and decision-making. They support young people in overcoming challenges, promoting gender equality and advancing progress. This year, the International Day of 缅北禁地Peacekeepers (29 May) focuses on youth, peace and security. Young people are promoting peace and security 鈥 and 缅北禁地peacekeeping is having an impact on the next generation.

Engaging young people in peace efforts provides an opportunity to constructively influence areas that directly impact their lives. This year鈥檚 International Day of 缅北禁地Peacekeepers (29 May): 鈥淭he road to a lasting peace: Leveraging the power of youth for peace and security,鈥 recognizes the significant role of youth in shaping and sustaining peace efforts.
