HIGH-LEVEL SIDE EVENT AT: 缅北禁地Climate Change Conference COP27

CONTEXT

The 32 landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) with a total population of more than 560 million inhabitants share common problems and structural vulnerabilities which expose them to the severe negative impacts of climate change. LLDCs isolation from global markets, level of development, and great reliance on climate sensitive sectors has increased their vulnerability droughts, floods, glacial lake outflow flooding, landslides and erratic weather. These disasters hurt agriculture productivity and trigger other calamities like famine, disease outbreaks and loss of biodiversity. These events have highlighted the need to enhance LLDCs’ capacity to address climate change.

ORGANIZERS

The event is jointly organized by the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and the Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS), the Government of Tajikistan and the Government of Botswana. The event is hybrid – both in-person and virtual.

OBJECTIVE

This event will examine climate challenges faced by LLDCs. Policy makers and other stakeholder representatives from LLDCs will discuss and share experiences, best practices, and financing solutions to mitigate climate change impacts and accelerate sustainable development in LLDCs. Speakers from LLDCs will highlight their priorities for COP 27 and required financial and technical capacities.

SPEAKERS

Speakers will include: H.E. Mr. Collen Vixen Kelapile, Permanent Representative of Botswana to the United Nations and Global Chair of the group of Landlocked Developing Countries; Ms. Rabab Fatima, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS); H.E. Mr. Bahodur Sheralizoda, Chairman, Committee of Environmental Protection, Government of Tajikistan Tajikistan; and Ministers from other landlocked countries.
