Special High-level Event of the General Assembly and ECOSOC

Mercredi, 08 February 2023 - 10:00am to 1:00pm

Theme: Doha Programme of Action as an accelerator of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda

Background

The global economic landscape is facing severe devastations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the climate change. The ongoing geopolitical tensions including conflicts in different parts of the world have further deteriorated the situation. The catastrophic impacts of these challenges have collectively posed a major threat to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The 46 least developed countries, with their inherent structural impediments and fiscal constraints, are facing the major brunt of these impacts. More than a decade of their development progress has already been wiped out. High inflation, rising interest rates, high food and energy prices, and looming debt burdens are posing serious threats to the recovery efforts of the LDCs.

Against this backdrop, it is imperative to undertake comprehensive, tangible and results-oriented actions, using all available resources and policy tools, to address the challenges that the LDCs have been facing.

The Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2022-2031 (DPoA) adopted at the First Part of the Fifth Ãå±±½ûµØConference on LDCs on 17 March 2022 and endorsed by the General Assembly on 1 April 2022 offers an ambitious agenda for the world to support LDCs to recover from the pandemic, build resilience against future shocks, and foster the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

There are strong interlinkages and synergies between the 2030 Agenda and the Doha Programme of Action for LDCs. Furthermore, the implementation period of the DPoA overlaps with the decade of action and delivery of the 2030 Agenda.

Timely realization of the goals and targets of the DPoA will accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the least developed countries.
