GEBZE, TURKEY, 3 June 2018 – The premises of the Technology Bank for Least Developed Countries in Gebze, Turkey were officially handed over today to the United Nations, by the Turkish Government.?

Competition Winner: Safia Mahdi

Safia Mahdi has been reporting for more than a year through the Al-Arabi website. Her stories are also carried by the “Here is Your Voice” radio station affiliated with Netherlands World Radio Station as well as Deutsche Welle Arabic. Safia graduated in 2014 with a BA in Journalism. Her interests include social, health and humanitarian issues.

LISBON, 2 May 2018 – Winning journalists from the Voices of a Brighter Future journalism competition have arrived in Lisbon to highlight the importance of sustainable energy in their communities. The competition, held by the 缅北禁地Office of the High Representative for Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, called on journalists from the world’s 47 least developed countries to submit stories about how sustainable energy is affecting communities and individuals in their countries.?

Competition Winner: Séna Libla

Séna Wislande Libla, was born on February 27, 1993 in Cotonou, Benin. She holds a degree in audiovisual journalism obtained in 2016. She is currently in her second year of a Masters in audiovisual journalism at the ISMA, Institute of Audiovisual Professions of Benin. Eleven months ago, she started working at the National Radio of Benin as a reporter.

Competition Winner: Moussa Ngom

Moussa Ngom is an independent journalist and therefore free to tour his country, Senegal, and narrate everyday stories of socio-cultural origins and unknown problems. After a short stint on television in 2017, he decided to make the most of the audience potential on the Net by practicing full-time his professional and civic blog the beginning of an adventure that takes him into the country every month to discuss topics of interest.

NEW YORK, 24 January 2018?– The world’s poorest countries are on track to close the digital divide as they make significant progress in achieving universal and affordable access to the Internet by 2020. This is according to a new report launched today which details progress that least developed countries (LDCs) have made in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 9.c.

The purpose of this occasional policy papers series, published by the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States?(UN-OHRLLS), is to analyse policy issues relating to the development of the least developed countries (LDCs), stimulate discussions and promote international cooperation. In keeping with this objective, the authors are encouraged to express their own views, which do not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations or its member States.

This report makes a clear case that there is an urgency in accelerating access?to clean, affordable and reliable energy in all of the LDCs, and that this will only?happen if governments, investors, donors and the private sector work together to unlock investment.

Broadband offers a way to diversify and add value to the economy and information and communication technology (ICT) is key crosscutting enabler for the country’s development strategy. The government is intent on increasing the service sector to reduce reliance on traditional agricultural production and exports. The country’s?Vision 2020?calls for Rwanda becoming a middle-income knowledge economy with ICT considered one of the three crosscutting areas for achieving the vision.
