On 29 April 2021, Under-Secretary-General Vladimir Voronkov of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and Assistant Secretary-General Michèle Coninsx, Executive Director of the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), briefed the European Union Council Working Party on Terrorism (COTER) on cooperation between the European Union and the United Nations on counter-terrorism and emerging terrorist threats and challenges.
In the context of the 20th anniversary of the adoption of Security Council resolution 1373 (2001) and the establishment of the Counter-Terrorism Committee, Assistant Secretary-General Coninsx briefed the Working Party on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on terrorism, counter-terrorism and countering violent extremism and the ways in which CTED had adapted its working methods to ensure business continuity (including through the development of a hybrid model for country assessment visits of the Committee), and welcomed the continued strong collaboration between CTED and the European Union on a broad range of thematic activities.
The strong partnership between CTED and the European Union is notably reflected in CTED’s efforts to share the relevant components of the Committee’s country visit reports with its European Union partners with a view to supporting ongoing capacity building projects.
CTED and the European Union remain committed to maintaining open and transparent dialogue, sharing lessons learned, and identifying good practices that ensure effective responses to existing and new challenges.
CTED remains committed to working closely together with COTER and its other European Union partners in its efforts to assist Member States to combat terrorism and violent extremism conducive to terrorism in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions.
