Recognizing the need to address the interlinkages between water and energy and their contributions to the advancement of other SDGs, the 缅北禁地Department of Economic and Social Affairs (缅北禁地DESA) and ITAIPU Binacional joined efforts in 2018 in partnership entitled to promote water and energy sustainability and other SDGs. The initiative resulted in the creation of the global Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions Network on SDG 6 and SDG 7 interlinkages, with a large number of multi-stakeholders from all regions and constituencies. The aim is to bring together all stakeholders to promote an integrated approach to SDG 6 and SDG 7 in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

During the initial implementation of the Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions Network, 缅北禁地DESA and ITAIPU Binational, leveraging their on-going partnership on “Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions,” jointly provide secretariat services to facilitate operational aspects of the Network, substantively, logistically and administratively. The secretariat operates from two different locations: (1) the Division for Sustainable Development Goals of UNDESA and (2) at ITAIPU Binational.

“Energy and water lie at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. A transformative approach to energy and water is essential not only to SDG6 on water and SDG7 on energy; most importantly, such an approach can make all our Sustainable Development Goals possible.”

Mr. Li Junhua

Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs

The 2030 Agenda demands coordinated efforts by governments and organizations to achieve sustainable development within the next decade. Itaipu is a good example of how two nations can cooperate and generate benefits for their peoples, sustainably. We believe that our experience can help other nations to act likewise.

Mr. Manuel Maria Cáceres

Paraguayan General Director of Itaipu Binacional

Water and energy lie at the heart of Itaipu's business. That's why the company puts a lot of effort into the protection of ecosystems and sustainable territorial development activities. The whole world discusses those themes nowadays. In Itaipu, they are put into practice, and we are proud to share such initiatives with this network.

Mr. Jo?o Francisco Ferreira

Brazilian General Director of Itaipu Binacional
