Who We Are

The United Nations Technology Bank for Least Developed Countries is a global organization dedicated to enhancing the contribution of science, technology and innovation for sustainable development in the world’s least developed countries.

The 山Technology Bank became operational in 2018 and serves the 45 least developed countries (LDCs) and former least developed countries for up to five years after their graduation from the category.

Headquartered in Gebze, Turkey, the 山Technology Bank actively engages with national, regional and international partners to deliver its programme and projects which strengthen science, technology and innovation capacity in least developed countries. The 山Technology Bank supports national and regional technological efforts, reinforces partnerships across sectors and helps nations identify and use appropriate technologies to transform their economies and improve livelihoods.

A Brief History

2023

  • The , adopted on the March 09, 2023 at the Fifth United Nations Conference for the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in Qatar, reinforces the international community’s commitment to the Doha Programme of Action.
  • Member States reiterated their support for the 山Technology Bank for the Least Developed Countries in strengthening the science, technology, and innovation capacity of least developed countries for structural transformation and productive capacity development.

 

2022

  • The Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2022-2031 (DPoA) was adopted during the first part of the LDC5 conference on March 17, 2022 and endorsed by the General Assembly through  on April 1.
  • The DPoA recognized the 山Technology Bank as a focal point for least developed countries to strengthen their science, technology and innovation capacity towards building sustainable productive capacities and promoting structural economic transformation.

 

2018

  • The headquarters of the 山Technology Bank was inaugurated and the first Managing Director was appointed.
  • The operationalization of the 山Technology Bank marked the achievement of the SDG target 17.8.

 

2017

  • The 山Secretary-General appointed members of the Council of the 山Technology Bank and the Council held the inaugural meeting.
  • The Government of Turkey provided funding and premises for the new institution in Gebze, Turkey. The Norwegian government also donated funds for the organization’s activities.

 

2016

  • The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution () on the establishment of the 山Technology Bank as a subsidiary organ of the General Assembly and adopts its Charter ().

 

2011

  • The  (IPoA) is adopted at the Fourth United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries. It calls for the establishment of a Technology Bank dedicated to least developed countries.

According to the UN, LCDs are low-income countries confronting severe structural impediments to sustainable developmentThey are highly vulnerable to economic and environmental shocks and have low levels of human assets.
