Al-Jahili Castle
This gift is a model representation of an important historical site in the United Arab Emirates: Al-Jahili Castle (or Fort). This model is gold-plated silver on a base of malachite gemstone with affixed emblems.
The original Al-Jahili fort was built from 1891 to 1898 and was constructed as a way to protect the local palm farmers but also served as a symbol of the power of the ruling family and as the royal summer residence. The original fort is located in the city of Al Ain, UAE, and still stands today as a historical site. Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan (1835-1909) aided in the construction of the castle, which was used as an official meeting place and later as a permanent residence for his descendants. The fort continues to draw attention and has been improved to accommodate visitors and display cultural activities.
The Government of the United Arab Emirates presented the model to the United Nations on 13 November 2000.
