Strengthening national capacity for the implementation of the
Global HIV Prevention Coalition Roadmap
Synopsis
The project aimed to reinvigorate and sustain HIV prevention measures at global and national levels. At the global level, UNAIDS aimed at sustaining international commitment for HIV prevention through the Global Prevention Coalition (GPC) roadmap with special attention to young people, people left behind and other populations at higher risk of HIV infection. At the national level, the project sought to strengthen national coordination mechanisms among the multitude of entities with diverse responsibilities in the subject matter, including informal local leaders, and to build their capacity in monitoring and evaluating the national programmes with a focus on adolescent girls and young women (AGYW).

The project areas of work were:

The main deliveries of this project were:
- At the national level, 5 beneficiary countries of the project developed HIV Prevention Roadmaps and strengthened programme monitoring by developing national targets (Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Uganda). In addition, in Uganda the project supported the development of their new Strategy, and in Malawi the management system for implementation of adolescent girls and young women programmes was reviewed.
- Defined packages for implementation of comprehensive HIV prevention for adolescent girls and young women have been developed in the five countries laying the grounds for coherent programme implementation at national level.
- At the global level, the ministerial meeting of the Global HIV Prevention Coalition on “Accelerating Progress Towards the 2020 HIV Prevention Targets – The promise of comprehensive HIV Prevention and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for all” in Nairobi (11 November 2019), had brought together more than 200 delegates, including ministers and deputy ministers of health from coalition countries and additional member states; in addition, during the ministerial event 28 countries made bold commitments and pledged to scale up HIV prevention in their respective countries and globally by 2020 and beyond. This high-level engagement shows the level of political mobilization that has been achieved as part of the Global HIV Prevention Coalition, supported by the project.
