    Ms. Tutwiler is Deputy Director-General for Knowledge at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). She previously served as Coordinator of Global Food Security in the Office of the United States Secretary of Agriculture, among many other assignments
  • Ms. Elisabeth Atangana
    Ms. Elisabeth Atangana is President of the Cameroon-based Regional Platform of Farmers’ Organisations in Central Africa (PROPAC). She also presides the Pan-African Farmers Forum (PAFFO), which brings together five regional farmers’ networks to protect the interests of family farmers at the local, regional and continental levels.

Agreed conclusions

The outcome of the Commission’s consideration of the priority theme takes the form of agreed conclusions, negotiated by all States. The Commission did not adopt agreed conclusions on the priority theme at its fifty-sixth session. Since no agreed conclusions on the priority theme were adopted, the Chair prepared a Chair's summary reflecting the course of the discussion.

Resolutions

The Commission adopted six resolutions and one decision, available in the

  • Ending female genital mutilation
  • Situation of and assistance to Palestinian women
  • Release of women and children taken hostage, including those subsequently imprisoned, in armed conflicts
  • Gender equality and the empowerment of women in natural disasters
  • Eliminating maternal mortality and morbidity through the empowerment of women
  • Indigenous women: key actors in poverty and hunger eradication
  • Women, the girl child and HIV and AIDS


NGO participation

The active participation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is a critical element in the work of the CSW. Ãå±±½ûµØWomen facilitates the participation of NGOs in sessions of the Commission.

Preparations

Ãå±±½ûµØWomen in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and World Food Programme (WFP) convened an on 'Enabling rural women's economic empowerment: institutions, opportunities and participation' from 20 to 23 September, 2011 in Accra, Ghana.

A preparatory expert panel on the priority theme was held during the fifty-fifth session of the Commission on Thursday, 24 February 2011.
