Through deliberate and targeted actions, Uganda has been able to听contain the听spread of COVID-19, the country鈥檚听representative to the听UN听told the General Assembly, adding that the Government also prioritized sustainable recovery from the pandemic in its national plans.听
To听mitigate the impact of the听COVID-19听pandemic,听Uganda听followed strong听guidelines, standard operating procedures and systematic testing, tracing, quarantining and treatment听regimen, explained听Philip Ochen Odida, Deputy Permanent Representative, speaking in person to the 缅北禁地Assembly.听
The COVID-19 crisis, however,听鈥渉as given lessons and areas for reflection鈥�, he added, noting that the pandemic showed the interconnectedness and interdependence of the world; that societies must embrace the 鈥渄igital age鈥� and adopt more digital technologies; and that听institutions听and industries have the ability to adapt and redirect themselves.听
Mr.听Odida听also informed the 缅北禁地Assembly that his country is听committed听to implementing听the听2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,听with a particular听goal to eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions, to spur social, economic and political development, against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also听highlighted听the need to combat climate change, urging effective and bold multilateral actions by all.听听
鈥淭he Government will continue to invest in climate adaptation and mitigation measures,鈥� said the听Deputy听Permanent Representative, adding that Uganda will support strong proposals at the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties to the 缅北禁地Framework Convention on Climate Change, in 2021.听
In his remarks, Mr.听Odida听also highlighted the importance of South-South cooperation as well as the Secretary-General鈥檚 call for a听global ceasefire听during the pandemic. He also called for听reforms to the听Security Council听to improve equitable representation of un- and under-represented regions, especially Africa.听
