Experts to recommend measures for transforming public institutions to aid implementation and monitoring of SDGs

Independent experts from 24 countries will meet from 18 to 22 April at 缅北禁地Headquarters in New York to recommend practical measures that governments should take to equip institutions to meet the challenges of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 15th session of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Public Administration (CEPA) meeting, the first since countries unanimously adopted the new 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda last September, will look at how public institutions and polices can enable governments to ?undertake the transformative actions that are necessary to implement the SDGs. Well-functioning institutions are considered the cornerstones of sustainable development and are essential for achieving positive results in health, education, agriculture, trade, environment and all other areas where public service plays a role.

“Transforming public institutions is essential to support the type of inclusive and integrated policies needed to realize the sustainable development goals,” said Mr. Wu Hongbo, United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, in his opening remarks to the expert.

To this end, governments need to work together in order to promote more coherent and integrated public policies to benefit the poorest and most vulnerable; break down silos and recognize the multiple interconnections between SDG areas; focus on inclusive and participatory decision-making; and ensure effective and innovative governance and responsive public service delivery, transparency and open government.

The meeting will highlight how to equip public institutions to support the realization of the SDGs. Governments across the globe have a central role to play in creating a favorable environment to foster economic growth, social cohesion and environmental protection.
