Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed commended European leaders for their leadership and commitment to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.

In an address on 7 June, at the opening of the European Development Days in Brussels, the Deputy Secretary-also called for “strengthening bonds of solidarity’’ to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and stressed the need for “partnerships that deliver.’’

The Deputy Secretary-General told an audience of world leaders, senior EU officials, private and civil society representatives, as well as youth leaders and Sustainable Development Goals Advocates, including Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, that the 缅北禁地recognized “the remarkable achievements of Europe’’ and welcomed the signing of the new European Consensus for Development.

“Let us join forces to build a future of dignity for all, in which no one is left behind,’’ the Deputy Secretary-General said.

Organized on an annual basis by the European Commission, the theme for the European Development Days this year is investing in development, with a focus on private sector engagement with youth, and women and girls in particular.

The Deputy Secretary-General reminded the audience that the 17 Sustainable Development Goals “are a collection of imperatives, and they are indivisible.’’ She called for investment in “intangibles,’’ including the building of strong institutions that create the rule of law and emphasized that partnerships needed to deliver.

She said Europe had an important role to play.

“European leaders continue to demonstrate strong commitment by aligning the work of the European Union with the 2030 Agenda,’’ the Deputy Secretary-General told the audience.

The Deputy Secretary-General outlined four priorities: strengthening the bonds of solidarity; intensifying our efforts to empower women and girls; increasing development financing; pressing ahead with climate action.

Speaking on behalf of the Sustainable Development Goals Advocates, Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway, said that the links between the social and economic issues embodied in the Sustainable Development Goals were the elements that would lead to change.

“The 2030 Agenda is truly transformational,’’ Ms. Solberg said. “We can and must be part of the SDG campaign.’’ Rich and poor countries must work together at the country level to achieve the Goals and eliminate poverty.

The two-day European Development Days included the signing of the new European Consensus on Development that commits among others to synchronize European policy with partners.

“We enter a completely new era’’ on development policy, said Federica Mogherini, EU Vice President and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs.
