Communication Challenges and Opportunities in the COVID-19 Era

Session I: 9 - 10:45 a.m.

Tools and Techniques of Effective Communication for NGOs

This workshop will address civil society communication challenges and opportunities during the COVID-19 era and the intersectionality of contemporary issues related to disparities and discrimination. The role of effective communication strategies and resources will be explored and elucidated.

Session II: 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Transforming NGO Communications: From Conversation to Advocacy, Action and Social Policy

This session will address the issue of communications regarding complex, global, contemporary societal issues and the intersectionality resulting in disparities and discrimination

Jeff Brez

As Chief of the Civil Society, Advocacy and Special Events Section in the 缅北禁地Department of Global Communications, Mr. Brez oversees relations with non-governmental organizations, the Messengers of Peace Programme, the Creative Community Outreach Initiative and Special Events. His work is international humanitarian aid and development assistance has spanned more than a decade and covered a range of issues including children’s and women’s rights, refugee assistance, child soldiers, health, education, sustainable agriculture and food security, environmental sustainability, anticorruption and climate change.

 

 

Fannie Munlin

Fannie M. Munlin is the Chair of the Global NGO Executive Committee, which serves as the liaison for the Non-governmental Organizations affiliated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications. She is also the Main Representative from the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) to the United Nations; an organization comprised of 250 community-based Sections and 39 national affiliate organizations. The NCNW has an outreach of nearly four million women in the United States and globally. Its programs are human and civil rights, economic development, education, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), advocacy, and public policy and research. In 2003 Ms. Munlin chaired the 56th Annual United Nations Department of Public Information and the Non-governmental Organization’s Annual Conference

 

Richard Yep

Richard Yep, CAE, FASAE is the Chief Executive Officer of the American Counseling Association, the largest membership organization of professional counselors in the world. He currently oversees a staff of 60 and a $14 million budget. ACA has more than 50,000 members. Rich has worked for ACA for 30 years, 21 of which as the Association’s CEO. He is also the President of the American Counseling Association Foundation.

Rich has a lifelong commitment to social justice and finding ways to easing the burden of those who are oppressed and underrepresented. He has presented on various issues impacting not-for-profit organizations relative to communications, advocacy, public policy, leadership development, and association management.

Rich has served as the organization’s NGO representative and he is currently a member of the Communications Subcommittee of the Global NGO Executive Committee.

His professional affiliations include the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) where he is a past Chair of the Committee on Diversity and Inclusion, completed a term on the ASAE Board of Directors, and was named an ASAE Fellow in 2012. In 2017, he received ASAE’s Key Award which honors an association CEO who demonstrates exceptional qualities of leadership and a deep commitment to voluntary membership organizations as a whole. Currently, Rich is on the CAE Commission and is a member of the Key Professional Associations Committee.

For ten years Rich served on the Board of Trustees of Excelsior College, an institution based in Albany, New York that is dedicated to adult learners. His support of Excelsior is rooted in his personal experience in working with individuals facing personal and professional challenges, but who are dedicated to improving their lives through education. Rich is a Chair Emeriti of the board. During the July 2018 Commencement, Rich was recognized with an honorary doctoral degree from the College.

Rich holds an undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Southern California.

 

Katrina Lee

Katrina is a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi. She began her career at the prestigious GCI-Atlanta (now Cohn Wolfe)—a globally recognized public relations firm. There, she excelled in media relations and crisis communications? honing her skills as an accomplished writer and results-oriented creative thinker for clients such as Johnson & Johnson, The Novare Group and Cousins Properties. As a Public Relations and Communications Strategist, she has been fortunate to work with various clients such as the award-winning firms of Dreamweaver Brand Communications and HipRockStar Marketing, and successfully ran an effectual campaign that led to the appointment of State Representative Kionne McGhee who now serves as the Florida House Minority Leader. 

Katrina is a member of PRSA and ColorComm and currently works as the Public Affairs Strategist for the American Counseling Association.

 

 

Holly Shaw

As an expert in health and healing with a focus on crisis, trauma and bereavement, Dr. Holly K. Shaw is a professor, clinician, consultant, and advocate. She earned a BS at Boston University and MS as clinical nurse specialist in psychiatric/mental health nursing, and PhD at Adelphi University, Garden City, NY. She is a 2016 graduate of the Harvard Medical School Master Class in Global Health, the Art and Science of Reflective Practice, and 2013 graduate of the Harvard Masters Certificate Program in Global Mental Health, Trauma and Recovery.

Her clinical and advocacy work are well known within the 缅北禁地System where she represents the International Council of Nurses and holds elected civil society positions in both DGC (Department of Global Communications) and ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council) Substantive Committees, including Former Director, Global NGO Executive Committee; Chair, the NGO Committee on Mental Health, Inc. and Chair, NGO Committee on Education, Learning and Literacy (NGO CELL).

Dr. Shaw is a frequent international keynote speaker and the author of peer-reviewed journal articles, and book chapters on adolescent mental health, education for global citizenship, SDGs and global nursing and health issues.

 

Rose Cardelli

Dr. Rose Cardarelli, FACHE has served as a Hospital Administrator, a Professor of Human Security, Trainer and Humanitarian. She has a Doctorate in Education from The College of William and Mary, a Master’s in Health Care Administration from Baylor University, and a Master’s in Education from Boston University. She is a veteran retiree of the United States Army, and as a Medical Service Corps Officer commanded at the battalion and brigade levels; she was trained as a US Army race relations officer. She is currently a Director on the following boards: The International Honor Society in Education – Kappa Delta Pi; Childhood Education International; and Fitchburg State University; she was recently appointed as the Rotary International Representative to UNICEF. She just completed her term on the Global NGO Executive Committee with the Department of Global Communication at the United Nations where she was the Chair of the Nominations & Elections Committee. She is also a board-certified Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Dr. Cardarelli currently provides education to displaced refugee children living in camps and settlements around the world.

 

Mazin Mukhtar

Mazin Mukhtar is a Sudanese-American who, by age 16, had a paid position at the University of Maryland’s Space Systems Laboratory, one of the premiere aerospace engineering laboratories in the US, as well as a job offer from Boeing. He dropped out in his fourth year at 18 to start working to reform the education system in California and New York, and co-founded Akshar Foundation in India in 2013. There, he helped to develop the Akshar Education Model, which converts schools into centers for sustainable development and community transformation.
