Activities
A number of activities were organised by Member States, 缅北禁地Bodies and organizations to mark the Year. Some examples include:
- In October 2011during a National Heritage week, events highlighted the various social, political and economic roles played by people of African descent in the growth and development of society;
- Special emphasis this year on women of African, Raizal and Palenquera descent on the observance of International Women鈥檚 Day;
- An event on innovative policies for social inclusion and recognition of the Afro-Colombian population;
- The creation of a National Commission for Afro-Costa Ricans;
- The commemoration of the bicentenary of the independence movement of people of African descent;
- A link established from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website offering information on activities connected with the Year;
- The launch in March 2011of a network of People of African Origin, during which a presentation on Africa was made by African students;
- A pledge of $10,000 to the voluntary fund for the erection of a permanent memorial to and in remembrance of the victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade at a place of prominence at United Nations Headquarters;
- Cultural and art institutions organized events that included African participants, with the objective of enhancing tolerance and inter-ethnic dialogue and teaching about the history, culture and traditions of African peoples.
