Washington, DC, 27 February 2023 - Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for South Sudan and Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (), was in Washington, DC, today, to discuss the current situation in South Sudan with key interlocutors.
While in the city, he visited the United States Department of State for meetings with officials, including: Peter Lord, Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Africa, Sudan, and South Sudan in the Bureau of African Affairs; Brian Grimm, acting Deputy Assistant Secretary with the Bureau of International Organization Affairs; and Michael J. Adler, United States Ambassador to South Sudan.
At the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), he met with officials including: Tyler Beckelman, Deputy Assistant Administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Africa; and Matthew Nims, Deputy Assistant to the Administrator of USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance.
Mr. Haysom also held a discussion with experts on South Sudan at the United States Institute of Peace (USIP).
Almost 20,000 peacekeepers serve with UNMISS to protect civilians and build durable peace in the conflict-affected country. The civilian, police and military personnel from 73 countries carry out many duties under the mandate provided by the United Nations Security Council. Their work falls under four main pillars: protection of Civilians; creating conditions conducive to the delivery of humanitarian assistance; supporting the implementation of the revitalized agreement and the peace process; and monitoring and investigating human rights.
