Representatives from countries across Central Asia and experts across the climate and clean air space came together in Astana, Kazakhstan from 11 to 13 June for the?.

The Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), which is convened by the United Nations Environment Programme, organized two workshops. One to support countries in national planning for rapid methane action and another on aligning the development of air pollutant and greenhouse gas emission inventory.

Methane Roadmap Action Programme

For training on the , the CCAC introduced new countries to its methodology for development and implementation of transparent and consistent national methane roadmaps or action plans.

It provided countries with practical guidance for leveraging the Methane Roadmap Action Programme methodology as well as the tools and resources of the CCAC.

Representatives from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan presented their efforts and plans for national methane action.

Aligning on emissions

To promote an integrated approach to inventory development, ECE facilitated a workshop to help participants design integrated air pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions inventory systems in their respective countries.

Given that data is largely the same for both types of inventories, it is more efficient and cost-effective to build a single coordinated system for estimating both greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions.

Compiling air pollutant and greenhouse gas inventories in tandem can help improve data quality and allow decision-makers to improve tracking of the impact of air pollution and greenhouse gas mitigation measures.
