The Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery was established in 2006 with the adoption of .

Remembrance and Awareness

The Outreach Programme is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to mobilize remembrance of the victims of the transatlantic slave trade and slavery, and to educate about the causes and consequences of the history to communicate the dangers of racism and prejudice.

Education

The programme works with the United Nations global network of information centres to educate students and the general public about the history of the transatlantic slave trade and its legacy of racism. The information centres have helped translate materials to create multilingual products in all of the official languages of the United Nations.

Action

The Outreach Programme aims to inspire youth and members of civil society to stand up against racism. The Department of Global Communications works closely with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights to raise awareness of the impact of the transatlantic slave trade on the modern world, including racism towards people of African descent, and the importance of standing up for human rights.

Working together

The Outreach Programme continues to build a network of partnerships with civil society, governments, educators and organizations involved in teaching the history of the transatlantic slave trade. Through these partnerships, the Outreach Programme has developed a range of educational resources including films and exhibits, for use at United Nations Headquarters and in the field.
