On September 21, 2023, the President of the seventy-eighth session of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis, convened the Summit of the Future preparatory ministerial meeting, marking a significant step towards the much-anticipated Summit event. Held in the Trusteeship Council Chamber, the preparatory gathering was held in alignment with the General Assembly , titled “Modalities for the Summit of the Future”, dated September 12, 2022.
The Summit of the Future, set for 2024 and recommended in the 'Our Common Agenda' report, is anticipated to be a landmark event. It aims to establish new foundations for strengthened and more effective global cooperation. The meeting served as a platform for Member States to share their visions and priorities for the upcoming Summit. It was a moment for nations to build upon the outcomes of the SDG Summit, outlining their expectations for tangible, action-oriented results.
This meeting is a key milestone in the global effort to address contemporary challenges and reshape the future of international collaboration. It sets the tone for a future that promises more robust, responsive, and inclusive multilateral mechanisms.

The session opened with remarks from Mr. Francis; United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres; Youth representative, Varaidzo Kativhu; stakeholder representative, Geetha Manjunath; and co-chair of the Secretary General's High-Level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism, Stefan L?fven. The opening segment was followed by statements from Member States and observers of the General Assembly at the ministerial level.
