SIDS Global Business Network - Palau, 12 April 2022
|
|
|
Our Small Island Developing States Global Business Network kicks off in Palau on 12 April at 09:00 local time (GMT+9). The event will harness the innovation of the private sector to help drive sustainable development in small island developing States (SIDS).
Through a forum taking place every two years, the network will bring together the international business community to focus on SIDS as potential market opportunities. This year, the forum takes place on the margins of the Our Ocean Conference in Palau and will focus on partnerships for the blue economy.
Why is this important? Because by 2030 the ocean economy could reach over USD 3 trillion. SIDS control about 30% of all oceans and seas and through enhanced partnerships with the private sector to build their blue economies, they can protect ocean resources and strengthen climate action – all while advancing their economic development.

NEW REPORT
Advancing the development goals of LDCs through
South-South Cooperation
|
|
Read our new report on the role of South-South Cooperation in advancing sustainable development and achieving the transformative recovery of the Least Developing Countries.
South-South cooperation is a manifestation of solidarity among peoples and countries of the Global South that contributes to their national well-being, their national and collective self-reliance, and the attainment of internationally agreed development goals.
In this report, we review the role of South-South cooperation in the implementation of the Istanbul Programme of Action (IPoA) by taking stock of best practices and identifying constraints in scaling up solutions. The report also focuses on the importance of renewing partnerships and enhancing cooperation in the follow-up agreement, the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries 2022-2031 (DPoA), which was adopted by the first part of LDC5 on March 17 and endorsed by the General Assembly on April 1.

Did you know that more than a third of people on the planet have never used the internet?
An overwhelming majority of them – 96 per cent – live in developing countries. Aiming to tackle this issue as part of a renewed push to support the Least Developed Countries, we helped launch a new platform to address four key priorities to ensure a sustainable global digital transformation:
- Access: Connecting people everywhere
- Adoption: Empowering communities
- Value creation: Building digital ecosystems
- Accelerate: Incentivizing investments
The platform – launched together with the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the Office of the Secretary-General's Envoy on Technology - is a crucial milestone in the realization of the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries.
The Partner2Connect?Digital Coalition will help bring about meaningful change in the countries that need it most, especially in the most vulnerable states.
