2022 was a turbulent year marked by new and overlapping crises of COVID-19, conflicts, and climate change. The LDCs, LLDCs, and SIDS - some of the world’s most vulnerable groups of countries - were hit the hardest. Their decades of development gains have been reversed. With so much at stake, it was both an opportunity and challenge for me to begin my work as the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States.
The year ahead provides us an opportunity to turn the tide, especially to better support these countries in recovering the lost ground and remaining on course to achieve the 2030 Agenda. We are just weeks away from the 5th United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries. We look forward to utilizing this opportunity to build stronger partnerships with all stakeholders to deliver transformative change to the people that need it the most.

Together, we must provide those furthest behind with a chance to be first in line for development and prosperity. From LDC5, we will immediately move to the preparatory processes for the Third Landlocked and Fourth Small Islands conferences. These two conferences will take place in 2024. We must leverage these important moments to bring about new solutions to the distinct challenges facing these two groups of countries.

I thank all our partners for the unprecedented support that UN-OHRLLS has received since the start of my time in office. I look forward to building on these firm foundations. Over the next 12 months we will work even harder to deliver real change to the lives and livelihoods of the one billion people in the LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS.
