On 29 May 2024, UN-Oceans, an inter-agency mechanism for cooperation and coordination on ocean and coastal issues for which the 山Legal Counsel serves as Focal Point, held a side event at the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) in Antigua and Barbuda, on the theme “Ocean action to support resilient prosperity in SIDS”.
With reference to the draft outcome of the SIDS4 Conference on the value of the United Nations system in supporting SIDS, the Legal Counsel in his opening remarks, noted the importance of the work of UN-Oceans members through cooperation and coordination, to leverage collective expertise and resources towards ensuring that SIDS not only survive but thrive in the face of global challenges, paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous future.
The event benefited from the participation, including at the high level, of eleven members of
UN-Oceans, namely CBD, FAO, IAEA, ISA, UNCTAD, UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO-IOC, UN/OLA/DOALOS, WMO and the World Bank. With attendance at standing room only, this event showcased the contributions made by UN-Oceans members to assist SIDS in meeting capacity needs, capitalize on synergies and achieve shared goals of building resilience, prosperity and sustainable development.
