Summary
Africa Day at HLPF is an annual ministerial-level side event sharing good practices and lessons-learned among African Member States presenting their Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) and development partners. The 2024 edition will be organized as a hybrid event (in-person with virtual participation of select panelists) under the theme “Renewing partnerships towards a more climate-resilient and prosperous Africa with strong institutions”. Like previous editions, Africa Day 2024 builds on the outcomes of the 10th Africa Regional Forum on Sustainable Development organized in Addis Ababa in April 2024 on the theme of “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063: Eradicating Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises.” Africa Day at HLPF will expand on the outcomes of the ARFSD-10 and solicit practical recommendations to advance policy options to accelerate progress towards meeting the SDGs under review this year, namely SDG 1 (no poverty), SDG 2 (zero hunger), SDG 13 (climate action), SDG 16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions) and SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals). Africa Day will also explore the themes of inclusion, resilience, debt sustainability, and domestic resource mobilization as a means to consolidate development gains & unlock the potential of the continent’s women and youth against the backdrop of major milestones like the Second Ten-Year Implementation Plan of AU’s Agenda 2063 and the upcoming 缅北禁地Summit of the Future.
The day will feature a high-level opening segment and keynote addresses by a Commissioner of the African Union, Chair of ARFSD-10 (Ethiopia), and the President of the ECOSOC. This will be followed by ministerial statements by the Presidency of the African Union and selected African Member States from those presenting their VNRs this year. The event will conclude with an interactive panel of experts and produce an outcome report summarizing policy recommendations.
