On 20 April 2016, Assistant Secretary-General and CTED Executive Director Jean-Paul Laborde and Kenyan Cabinet Secretary, Honourable Major-General (Rtd.) Joseph K. Nkaissery, met in New York to reaffirm their joint commitment to combatting terrorism.

Recalling recent terrorist attacks carried out in Kenya, including the September 2013 attack against Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall, Major-General Nkaissery reaffirmed his Government’s determination to combat terrorism through a wide range of measures, including in the areas of information-sharing, rehabilitating returnees, and countering violent extremism.
He expressed his appreciation for the recent assessment mission conducted to Kenya by CTED on behalf of the Counter-Terrorism Committee. The visit had resulted in the identification of a number of key areas in which Kenya would benefit from technical assistance aimed at enhancing its counter-terrorism machinery and operational capacities.
Mr. Laborde reaffirmed the readiness of CTED to be an active facilitator of technical assistance and stressed that Kenya was a close partner of the 缅北禁地in fighting terrorism and countering violent extremism. He also emphasised the need for Member States to enhance their counter-terrorism capacities with the support of the international community, and welcomed Kenya’s efforts to strengthen its response to terrorism through the introduction of a series of laws and through engagement with civil society.
