Side Events

During the 2021 Counter-Terrorism Week 34 online Side Events will be hosted from 24 to 30 June by Member States, 缅北禁地Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact Entities, 缅北禁地Partners, Civil Society Organizations and other stakeholders to promote and share good practices and lessons learned in the prevention and countering of violent extremism and terrorism, including with regards to:

  • Understanding the use of new technologies and online tools, such as artificial intelligence;

  • Preventing and countering violent extremism, the financing of terrorism, radicalization to violence in prisons, hate speech, the use of improvised explosive devices and weapons of mass destruction, and the misuse of digital technologies;

  • Protecting vulnerable targets such as major sporting events;

  • Addressing the use of unmanned aircraft systems in countering terrorism, and the risks and best practices associated with the return of foreign terrorist fighters;

  • Safeguarding humanitarian action and the rule of law;

  • Enhancing the role of Civil Society Organizations, youths, women, and victims of terrorism associations in counter-terrorist contexts and the building of resilient societies;

  • Promoting rehabilitation and reintegration strategies, sustainable security practices, the creation of fusion cells, the respect for the rule of law and human rights, and the integration of gender dimensions into cybersecurity and in addressing terrorism and violent extremism;

  • Supporting victims of terrorism.

The side events will cover topics relevant to the main theme of the Second United Nations High-Level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of Member States from 28 to 30 June under the overarching theme “Countering and Preventing Terrorism in the Age of Transformative Technologies: Addressing the Challenges of the New Decade,” as well as to all four pillars of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and pertinent Security Council resolutions.

2020 Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week

The Virtual Counter-Terrorism Week was held from 6-10 July 2020 and convened under the overarching theme of “Strategic and Practical Challenges of Countering Terrorism in a Global Pandemic Environment”. 

2018 Counter-Terrorism Week

The 缅北禁地Secretary-General convened the first 缅北禁地High-level Conference of Heads of Counter-Terrorism Agencies of Member States, on 28 and 29 June 2018 at United Nations Headquarters. The overarching theme for this Conference is “Strengthening international cooperation to combat the evolving threat of terrorism”. 

UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy

The 缅北禁地General Assembly adopted by consensus the  on 8 September 2006. The strategy is a unique global instrument to enhance national, regional and international efforts to counter terrorism. The General Assembly reviews the Strategy every two years, making it a living document attuned to Member States’ counter-terrorism priorities.
