Excellencies,
Distinguished guests,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Welcome to this informal briefing on the High-level Dialogue on Energy, which the Secretary-General will convene in September in the margins of the General Assembly.
I am gratified to see growing engagement and leadership of Member States in support of the High-level Dialogue on Energy. We now have a total of 30 Member State Global Champions represented at the Ministerial level.
The Global Champions are spearheading advocacy for the Dialogue and mobilizing Energy Compacts.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Energy is key to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. We must ensure universal access to electricity and clean cooking solutions. We must also accelerate just and inclusive energy transitions to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, while leaving no one behind.
The High-level Dialogue on Energy provides a unique opportunity to advance both objectives, in a holistic way.
Allow me to present a roadmap towards the High-level Dialogue on Energy, around three clusters.
First, the Ministerial-level Thematic Forums will be organized for the week of 21-25 June 2021. They will share experiences and highlight action towards the achievement of SDG7 and net zero emissions.
The Forums are co-hosted by the Global Champions. They are open to all Member States and other stakeholders, including business and civil society. Over 25 Ministers have already confirmed their participation. I invite all Member States to join and speak at the Forums. Official invitations with detailed information have been sent through the Permanent Missions.
The multi-stakeholder Technical Working Groups, composed of over 160 experts from all stakeholders around the world, are finalizing their reports and recommendations.
Their reports will serve as background material for the Ministerial Thematic Forums, which will contribute towards a global roadmap for the achievement of SDG7 and net zero emissions.
I will work closely with the Co-Chairs to develop a Summary of the Ministerial Thematic Forums, which will serve as background material for the Dialogue in September.
Second, we now need to focus on mobilising Energy Compacts.
Energy Compacts are voluntary commitments and action by all stakeholders towards the achievement of SDG7 and net zero emissions. They are central to the success of the Dialogue.
The mobilization of Energy Compacts is progressing well, supported by a series of technical workshops.
The Global Call for Action on 26 May has created additional momentum.
缅北禁地DESA is pleased to support the development of the online registration platform for Energy Compacts, as part of SDG Acceleration Action.
SRSG Ogunbiyi will provide more details on Energy Compacts later.
Third, we are working closely with the office of the Secretary-General to prepare for the summit-level High-level Dialogue on Energy, to be held during the high-level week of the General Assembly in September.
We hope to share more information with you shortly, including the date and other logistical arrangements.
I would like to thank all those Member States and UN-Energy organisations that have provided substantial support during this extremely intensive preparatory process. We would specifically like to thank the governments of the Netherlands and Norway for their financial support.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Let us take full advantage of this opportunity to come together in support of building a sustainable energy world that truly leaves no one behind, for us and for future generations.
As the Dialogue Secretary-General, I look forward to working with Member States and all other stakeholders to make it a success.
I thank you.
