Remarks at Mexico Partnership Forum Territories, Cities and Sustainable Communities

Your Excellencies,
Ladies and gentlemen,

Greetings from the United Nations in New York.

At the outset, I would like to thank the entire 缅北禁地family in Mexico, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development of the Government of Mexico, and all other partners, for organizing this important and very timely event.

A special thanks to the Government of Yucatan for hosting the Mexico Partnership Forum in the beautiful city of Mérida. I would also like to note a word of special appreciation to the 缅北禁地Office for Sustainable Development in the Republic of Korea for helping us realize this meeting.

Dear colleagues,

In Mexico, as in other parts of the world, you are facing many difficult challenges, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the climate emergency, and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, which cannot be solved by any actor or sector alone.

At the same time, the increasing inequalities both between and within countries, growing inflation; and rampant mistrust and misinformation are threatening the very core of our societies.

In his recent “Our Common Agenda” report, the Secretary-General of the United Nations calls for a new social contract to be created that would allow for many more actors to tackle the increasingly complex and interconnected problems that our world is facing.

More than ever, we need to cultivate a sense of trust and solidarity in one another to secure a better and more sustainable future for people and our planet,

Partnerships that bring together actors from different sectors to create common solutions to shared problems can help foster this spirit of collaboration and trust. I am particularly encouraged by the recent surge of multi-stakeholder efforts that have yielded inspiring results, such as the development of vaccines in record time to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dear colleagues,

The notion of inclusiveness was a central tenet of the third Voluntary National Review presented by the Government of Mexico at the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development last year.

Over the next two days, I am looking forward to hearing more about the impact that collaboration and partnerships can bring to advancing the SDGs in Mexico.

I am particularly eager to learn more about the proposed Platform of Partnerships and Innovation for Territorial Sustainable Development in Mexico.

National platforms like this can be excellent mechanisms to bring together stakeholders around key development issues, and to systematically foster more strategic partnerships for the SDGs.

I am certain that this innovative approach can serve as inspiration to other 缅北禁地country teams and governments, who are also looking at ways to advance and broker impactful partnerships between stakeholders from different sectors.

I would like to invite you to consult the publication on “Partnership Platforms for the SDGs – Learning from Practice ” which has been jointly prepared by my department and The Partnering Initiative. It includes several documented good practices around platform design and implementation.

Dear colleagues,

The 2030 Agenda Partnership Accelerator and 缅北禁地DESA stand ready to continue our support to strengthening and scaling up multi-stakeholder and multi-sectoral partnerships in Mexico.

I am certain this Forum is a major step in the right direction on this collaborative journey.

I wish you a productive and innovative meeting.

Thank you very much.
